The 2 most common issues are a freon leak or the outside unit fan start capacitor goes out. It's more likely a capacitor issue. They fail regularly, especially when it's as hot as it's been this year. I had a fan capacitor go out on one of my 3 units last year and it cost close to $300 for an AC company to come out and fix it. I watched them fix it and it's something that you can do yourself if you know what you're doing and are careful to hook it up right. I have three AC units and another capacitor went out this year and I found a kit with detailed instructions with pictures and phone support at hvacrepairkits.com. It saved me over $200 on the capacitor replacement.

Unplug it and open it up. You are looking for a capacitor that goes to the compressor and fan. It may be shaped like a cylinder. On one end, it may be pushed out from within. This is a blown capacitor. Replace this part and the AC should run again.

I have fixed several central air units by finding and replacing the bad capacitor.

When you open it up, also look for burn out wires.

first check the capacitor measure, see if measurement correspond with its label ex. 40 mf or 50 mf. I believe the winding for the fan motor are loosing its insulation, you might need to replace the fan motor, if installing new one follow the diagram and rotation their is an arrow indicating the rotation of the fan blade

This is likely due to a lack of airflow. Make sure that the air filter is clean and that there are no obstructions blocking the air intake or exhaust vents. If this does not resolve the issue, you may need to have a technician come out and inspect the unit for any other potential issues.

Not 100%certain to what styrofoam you are referring to but there is definitely styrofoam components inside the machine. The entire drain pan is made of styrofoam, I would not touch it.

Have you drained the water?

The blower wheel probably is dirty. The unit is sensing that not enough air is flowing across the AC coil.

Mine is doing the same but it's very moldy and dirty. It worked well when we used it for the first month when we moved into our Gma's house. She left the unit. It's old yes but it worked fine before. did you clean it with water? They don't mix. Use a hairdryer to dry thoroughly.

if fan require an effort to turn it is bad should spin freely

Centigrade is much easier. Fridge at 3'C and Freezer at minus 18'C. Freezing is 0' and boiling is 100'. Is this an electric unit or does it run on fuel?

thats normal its showing ambient when you lower it the number will change to the setting and then will go back to show what the ambient temp as the room gets cooler the temp number will go down and shut off at set temp
