Normally your system should save its preferences and subsequently switch off. I suggest you completely unplug the system, wait for one minute and plug the system back in. it should start up with a message Lifestyle system XXX and then be available. Unscrew the disc holder plate from the assembly to keep away the magnet touching the spindle motor, this may affect the reading and spinning of the motor upon testing with the multimeter.
This is how it looks like after removing the disc plate holder in the assembly. Spindle motor is secured with 2 small screws in the lens assembly. Pull-out the connectors from the main board to see the underside of the tray.
You may test the spindle motor with your multimeter set in resistance measurement (ohms X1) even connected to the small board. Bad motor will read either less than 5ohms(shorted winding) or infinity (open winding) and will not spin. Good motor will read more than 50 ohms(depends the size) and will spin upon testing. Onced you've confirmed that the motor was already faulty, unscrew it from the lens assembly.
Replaced the spindle motor with new one. Before you install the new motor make sure that the clearance of the disc holder is the same as the old one. Compare first the clearance because if it is to high the optical lens will not read the disc same if it is to low....
After replacing the motor re-insert all the connectors to the main board. I've load same disc which does not read a while ago and observe what will happen. Sometimes cleaning the disk will solve the problem. Also resetting the system by pulling the power cord and putting it back in can solve the problem. If this does not help, then sometimes updating the system with the latest software can help. Just call Bose and ask for an update disk. Last but not least if nothing works, send the unit to Bose for repair.
I assume your display shows Bose 321 and refuses all commands?
Your problem is not very well described. Often when something like this happens you may be able to "reset" the system by removing the AC cord from the power and after a count of 10 putting it back in. Normally the display will start with showing the Bose 123 text on the display and will subsequently go dark. After that you can switch the unit on and it should work. If it does not, call Bose, sometimes just updating the software solves this type of problem. Ask for an update disk. Normally they send that free of charge to your registered home address.
Sometimes it is as simple as replacing the batteries. If indeed, after replacing the batteries the symptoms are exactly the same, I would contact Bose and ask or order a replacement remote. Depending on the age of your system, they may send one under warranty or you may have to pay for it. 1 800 ASK BOSE will do it I believe.
Just register with Bose and you will receive regular updates for your system, so that it recognized the titles of the newer CD 's you may want to store
