It just turns on without lens action and then will not turn off

You probably have a lens-jam situation. Try knocking gently around the lens front - like a tap with your finger while turning/ pressing the power button.

Mode dial proper position

That depends on what you want to do. If you want to shoot a video then you set it to the "Movie" position. If you want to setup the camera then you set it to the "Setup" position. If you want to let the camera control everything then you set it to the "Auto" position. And so forth. See page 6 of this manual: http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/coolpix/CP2100man.pdf

Sorry to say but this camera can only support a maximum 512 MB of memory card so the 1GB size will not be read by this unit.

Pictures wont download to computer

Consider NOT connecting the camera to the computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Nikon Transfer.

The lens is stuck and

Hi,
Follow this steps in order the resolve the issue.
  • What you can try to do is spray some compressed air into the lens to try to free up any sand or dust that may have worked its way in. If that doesn't help, you can gently bump the camera to try to free the focusing ring.
  • Switch the camera OFF and then ON again 2-3 times.
  • Remove and recharge / replace the battery, If the error does not clear, Keep battery battery out of the camera overnight, and try again the next day.

Else your device need service (repair)
Good Luck & have a nice day.

How do I erase all the pictures from a Nikon

That's not a good idea. If you have stored the pics safely on your computer, you can completely erase the card in the camera by going into the menu and finding "format"...follow the on-screen instructions.

Lens wil not open. Turn camera on and it gives you a "lens error"

Hi,

The problem is actually quite common throughout all camera brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended.

1.Remove the batteries from the camera, wait a few minutes. Put a fresh set of batteries back in (preferably rechargeable NiMH 2500mah or better) and turn the camera on. If that didn't work, try pressing and holding the Function or OK button while turning the camera on.

2.
Remove the batteries, then remove the memory card. Then install new batteries, and turn on the camera. If you get an Error E30, it means you don't have a memory card installed, so turn it off, slip in the memory card and turn it on one last time.

Thank you !!

Hi andbaxt.

I've only just seen your posting by random chance, although you addressed your posting to me FixYa does not currently work that way so I was not alerted to your message. Although it's been five months since your posting I thought I'd reply just to let you know that your message has not been ignored.

Although I'd be happy to offer you direct assistance, FixYa rules prohibit posting any messages which contain personal contact details. The rule is there to ensure that FixYa remains as safe as possible for all participants, but like all such rules it's by necessity a broad brush which may occasionally be inconvenient. But safety must come first.

FixYa presently offers no way to request help directly from individual Experts either, but it is a constantly evolving site and this may eventually change. My own opinion is that FixYa is an information resource, not a forum and as all FixYa Experts are volunteers being able to directly contact us could result in large mail inboxes which may drive Experts away. Helping others is enjoyable, but not if it becomes a chore. There is an exception to this and it's that Experts can choose to register on the site as Repair Professionals, listing their business on this site. But again, it's a broad brush: if I want to make my details available to you then I'm available to all and this is not something which suits me at the present time. Not least because most of the resulting enquiries would be from the USA/Canada which would be impractical for someone living in south London.

In summary, sorry I cannot assist you directly, but it really is a straightforward job if you follow the instructions in my original posting. If you really don't want to do it yourself, then perhaps you know someone else with practical skills who can follow the instructions: anyone who is into making models should find it to be a piece of cake.

Nikon coolpix 2100- out of memory- After installing 4gb CF card

4GB requires FAT32. Camera firmware only supports FAT16. 4GB won't work because FAT16 has a 2GB maximum size limitation. 1GB CF card is Nikon's "approved" maximum for this camera.

Catch: 22 1GB -and lesser capacity- CF cards are no longer manufacturered or generally available in 2010. When the current CF card dies, the still working camera also becomes throwaway unless you can source a CF card 1GB or under. 2GB may work, but with 'issues' per caution below.

CAUTION: Anecdotal evidence suggests the final release -& current- firmware for cameras of this generation is also encumbered by with a maximum picture number limitation of 999, realistic at the time of original manufacture when 256MB was a the largest capacity CF card but completely nonsensical now.

Summary: This is my first NIkon Digital camera and also my last.

Apart from the noteriety of the ubiquitous broken Nikon plastic battery latch, a major design flaw Nikon refuse to acknowledge or accept liability to rectify -since self-repaired better than OEM, Nikon policy on firmware support is complete abandonment of product within an unacceptably short service window. ie: a deliberate poilicy of enforced obsolescence.

Suggested Problem Remedy: Do buy a new camera supporting SD Cards of current capacities. Don't buy anything branded Nikon.
