Need some more information to help you. Does your drive even spin up? If not, are the extra 4 pins you are referring to similar to the standard power pins on the PATA drives? If so they are to be used with power supplies that do not have the SATA power connector. You can use EITHER the SATA power connector(15 pin) OR the other 4 pin power connector. NOT BOTH !!! If the pins are not power connectors, then you are probably referring to jumper pins. Ensure that that all the jumper pins are open. If the drive still does not spin up, the pin 11 on the SATA power cable is probably floating indicating a delayed spin up mode. In this mode, the drive will need the PHY initialization sequence from the system before spinning up. You can override this by grounding pin 11 of the 15 pin SATA power connector. I assume it is a USB connection? Does it also have a power adaptor or a USB dongle that has 2 USB connectors? If you cannot get it to power up, the only other option to retrieve your data is to take the HD out of the case and connect it to a PC or laptop using a SSD or SATA to USB adapter and see if you can get the PC to recognize it.

I doubt they are still available but usually one can be found on the maxtor web site, (many years ago).

I replace my hard drives after 2 or 3 years. Yours seems to have quit early, possibly the transformer is not working. If your external drive lights up, the electronics could be bad. At any rate, the bad news is it sounds like time for a new drive. I hope you have a backup of the contents.

The application that was used to create those files is not in your laptop. Ergo, they cannot be read.

First thing I would do is test the hard drive to make sure it is good. If new, that does not guarantee that it is good. Use a hard drive adapter that allows you to connect it to the USB port of another computer and run a full test.

If you mean the Maxtor disk utility that comes with raw hard drives, it is NOT necessary to install this in order for the drive to work. If the new computer already has an OS on it and is working, what part of the Maxtor utility is it that you think you need? The OS has all the tools you would need to work with the disk. Or you could always download a 3rd party app to do the specific task. If this is regarding an external drive, again the new computer ( and OS) will have whatever tools you would need to work with the disk. In fact you should only have to plug the external disk into the USB port and the new computer will find it and ask how you want to use it, etc. The Maxtor disk utilities that came with raw drives is pretty much obsolete when used with a current Windows or Mac OS.
