If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, greenish, or blueish or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

When I leave my TV

Depending on the age of the TV it sounds like its over heating after being on for a certain amount of time. If you can hear the tv start to make different noises/get louder over time then it would confirm the over heating. If it is over heating you can attempt to remove the back panel, or place the tv in a more ventilated area, or even place a little fan blowing into the back of it. A lot of large TV's can have over heating problems due to the large screen.

Hope this helped.

Just got this t.v from

projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Tv show pip but not regular screen.

It sounds like a problem with the tuner in the set.

Every set with PIP has either a dual tuner or one for PIP and another called Main.

To prove what your problem is hook the set up from the cable box to one of the video inputs and see if it works that way; also if a DVD or blue ray work via the rear inputs it is a tuner problem.

If set actually has 2 tuners (one for PIP and the other for main} it can be either tuner causing the problem as they are interconnected.

Confirm no problem when av inputs are used.

Even if you do not use a cable or satellite box now, that way would cost you little compared to having a tuner replaced.

Let me know if you have questions with a comment posted here, the site will email me, it is not fast but let me know if you have questions.

Is it possible to replace

Yes it is possible. You might want to clean the fungus though(not biological fungus. This one is due to chemical reaction of the aluminum casing and the coolant). I have to caution you that CRTs are HV devices. They should be handled only by trained professionals as they hold residual voltages of about 30,000V for several days after the set is off.

AKAI PROJECTION TV 54" - 6 YEARS OLD, DULL PICTURE

PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN DOING THIS PROCESS!!! YOU WILL DESTROY YOUR CIRCUIT BOARD LIKE I DID IF YOU DO NOT TAKE YOUR TIME OR ARE CAREFUL!!
What you need to do is clean the CRT coolant inside the TV. Here is a forum that I SHOULD have read before doing mine:

CRT COOLANT REPLACEMENT AND CLEANING

I was lazy and not taking my time to take care in not dripping any CRT coolant and some got on my circuit board, ( I felt confident since I had changed the Blue CRT 2 years prior) and I was only able to see about 1 hour of the best viewing my TV has ever given me since it was new, it looked like a miracle had happened. My TV was "dull" as the best way to describe it, colors faded, kinda fuzzy. I briefly researched into it again to refresh my memory then jumpted right into not really taking any precautions. I got lazy and didn't take out the CRT's like I did the first time with the Blue CRT and paid the price for it. Let me tell you, theirs nothing worse than getting a perfect brand new like picture only to loose it and hour later because of carelessness. Take out the CRT's, take your time, label everything and take pics, the reward is WELL worth it. Oh ya, you can use Mineral oil instead of the coolant that they sell at stores. Its not conductive, and dose'nt damage the circuit board if u spill a little. I used Baby Oil the first time I did it and when I went back to change the green CRT this time around it was still crystal clear, no discoloration in the Blue CRT I had done 2 years prior. I hope your results come out better than mine did!!

Won't turn on hissing sound

glenphilip53,

Usually when you have a hissing sound, unit won't turn on, on a TV with high voltage, one of two things is happening. The first and most likely problem is the flyback had cracked and is bleeding high voltage to ground. Set will not turn on, you will hear hissing. The second possiblility is that one or more of the high voltage wires and/or connections has come loose and again the high voltage is leaking off. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4916851-diagnosing_repair_tv_high_voltage which explains the troubleshooting process, where to get the parts and how to install them.

Thanks for using FixYa and consider a great rating. Ratings are important as well as testimonials if you are happy with the information supplied.

Convergence is all messed up

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs.
