Akai rear projection tv suddenly stopped working.

This set with Akai is actually made by Samsung (they own and use the Akai name). If lamp light etc and you have heard a cracking sound it may be the color wheel. You can remove the lamp and look where it faces--look and the wheel can be seen----is it shattered or missing plastic pieces? The wheel commonly fails in this fashion and is turning at over 12,000 rpm. The set will detect if the wheel is stopped or moving too slow and just what you describe will happen. Wheel is widely available and You Tube has video instructions for replacing them by model number. Questions? 3_29_2012_2_46_37_pm.jpg

54 inch Akai Tv makes brief siren noise when plugged up.

I have had a few of these with similar symptoms. In one case the set had a coolant leak onto the circuit board. The way I found the problem was to unplug the power and removed the front cover.(most models you can remove speaker grill and access panel) Make sure power is unplugged. When I looked in using as much lighting as possible I was able to see small puddles of coolant that had dripped onto the circuit boards from the picture tubes above. The other one as I recall had an arcing picture tube which caused a screeching type sound seconds after plugging in, then it would go into protect mode and just have a blinking light. I'm sorry to say but in both cases it was deemed unrepairable due to expense or lack of parts. Although, in many other cases I was able to clean the leaks and circuitry to restore power. Keep in mind this is just an educated guess. Good Luck, Russmann.

Losing the color in an Akai model PT5492

I'm sorry that the TV is losing color. Please follow the troubleshooting steps and check the operation:
  1. Please make sure that the connections are secure and proper.
  2. Try connecting a different video source like DVD player or VCR and check the operation. If it works with another device, the issue might be with the input device currently.
  3. Also try connecting the device to a different port in the TV if no other devices are available.
  4. If the issue persists, try with a different cable.
  5. Perform a power resetting and check the operation. To perform the power resetting, unplug the TV from wall outlet for more than 2 minutes and then reconnect it.

If the issue persists, Picture tube of the TV may have to be replaced.

Thanks for understanding. Please let me know if you require any clarifications/additional help.

I turn on my akai

Hello benjapoo62,

Welcome and thank you for using FixYa!

You need to have the soldier joints around flyback transformer checked for weak spots. Then have the transformer tested. They should also test the backlight bulb inverter board. Just in case the set is on, but goes dark once the inverter board heats up.
If I were doing your repair, i would spend a good day testing these componants and be prepared to replace them.

Have a great evening!

The blue is usually dimmer than the other two lens; what I would suggest is try to look into the lens with the set on; BE CAREFUL AND NOT TOUCH ANYTHING INSIDE THE SET.

If the red and green show a picture but the blue looks like a floodlight you have bad Glycol in the blue tube (common in these sets).

If all have a normal picture remember to wipe the lens clean at the top; do not try to take the lens etc apart.

Before you rate this information let me know what you find.

Every thing on tv works

You might wish to unplug the TV for an hour or more. If this power reset does not allow the TV to turn on component failure is indicated. These sets are assembled using the wave soldering process they are known for having cold solder connections.

The safety circuitry shuts the TV set down or will keep it from turning on when it detects a problem. This model of TV has over 2,000 parts, which includes millions of transistors inside the integrated circuits. The capacitors will change value, leak and become defective. Resistors will change value and burn. Diodes and IC can go bad.

This may have a domino effect and cause other parts to fail. Replacing one defective part may make the TV operate for a short time but the part will fail again if the parts that caused the failure to begin with are not replaced.

The only way to know for sure which parts that are no longer within factory specs and for a proper repair all the electronics must be diagnosed by someone with the correct electronic test equipment specifically designed for TV service and the skills to use the test equipment. I wish I could tell you there was a quick fix or button to push that would fix the TV but that is not the case or the solution needed to get the TV operating correctly.

Black Screen - Sometimes, the TV may display a black screen, now you need to check the cables whether they are properly plugged or not. Reconnecting all the cables can also work for this problem. Also, if the screen has a screen saver, check how it's set up. And, if nothing works for this issue, then there is a possibility that the lamp, rear projection, or the LCD panel may have been damaged. Now, you need to check your warranty card of your television and see your set comes under the manufacturer's warranty period. Call the customer service for technical problem and get replaced if a part demands it.

The picture is very dark.

Your set needs a cleaning or the coolant changed in your guns, the ar gery that is growning
in the guns is bocking the video, and it will cost about 250 to the coolant changed.

The tv vision is red,

Please do us a favor and rate this solution after reading.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

I have 3d affect. unable to read text . colors not

You have a convergence problem. You must replace the convergence ICs. These are located in the power board (this has the Flyback transformer). It has been sometime since I have repaired one of these. The convergence ICs are of the STK-392-110. You must replace these. These ICs are located on two large heat sinks. You will need lots of patience to remove the board. Then you will need lots of patience to remove these convergence ICs. Inspect the board close for burned resistors near the ICs. (these are under 10 ohms at 2 watts). Check these with an ohm meter and replace as necessary. The best information for a first timer who really wants to repair this TV, see the website, www.TVRepairKits.com. This is an excellent source with photos and parts lists to correct your problem. Another note....some of these TVs are made by Samsung. The model number you find on the website may tell you this. So, now you know you will be on your way for repair! Thanks for asking and show all hands of support!

The B+ voltage can be replaced by unpluggin the television for at least 24 hours before beginning the work on the tv. This allows the charge to dissipate.
