You may need to have the unit cleaned. The problem is DVD players have come down in price quite a bit so to have it cleaned might cost you $50 when you can buy a new one for $60.
The cheaper alternative is to open it up yourself and see if you can clean any sensors. Of course unplug it when opening the unit up. Once the cover is off, plug it back in and throw a DVD in it. Look for any lights or mirrors that may need cleaning. Use a Q tip dipped in rubbing alcohol to lightly clean them. Here's the thing...if the thing can't read a DVD it's useless so I don't think you have to worry about breaking anything since it's already not working. Just be careful not to touch where the power comes in or where the transformer is. Always unplug the unit when taking off or putting on a metal cover.
