Lights Out!!!

We certainly do not want the wife upset. Been married over 27 years and I know what thats like!!!

You will need a multimeter to measure a few things to determain just what is causing this. It could be the flourescent display thats bad or it could be it is not getting the voltage supply to the display.

This display is supplied A/C from the main power transformer. If you look at the unit with the top off, you will see a set of wires that goes form the transformer to the smaller board on the display. It is should be 2 white and 2 brown. In the number 1 and 2 position you have the supply you are looking for, it should be the white wires. It should be an A/C voltage but I am not sure how much. I don't remember and the schematics don't say. I have seen A/C voltages as low as 5 or 6 volts and as high as 30 to 40 volts. Measure across the two white wires at the connector on the board and if you get anything more than just 3 or 4 volts A/C it is probably the right voltage. If you have no voltage there, you need the power transformer replaced. That is an exspensive part, normally well over $100 for Denon's.
If you have that voltage there, you need to check some components of the small square display board. Before I spend a lot of time telling you what and how to check these things, let me know if you have the proper tools to do the job. If you don't, you need to take it in to be checked by a professional technician.

You need a multimeter, soldering iron with solder and solder wick to remove solder form the board. You will most likely be replacing a part or two.

I hope you keep on living the dream, and this Denon doesn't turn into a nightmare for you.

Let me know if you want to really dig into this thing. I will help.

Dave

p.s. If you found this information helpful, a good rating of "FixYa" or "Helpful" would be appreciated. The other two ratings are bad ratings and only pulls the rating of an expert down.

Denon 3805

If the display never lights up at all, even for a few seconds, the main power transformer is the most likely problem. I work at a Denon authorized service center and repair lots of these Denon's, including this model.

The transformer should be checked to make sure, but it is more comon than anything else. You can also check the fuses inside the unit. Make sure the unit is not plugged in when you open it. It has several glass fuses, but the one close to where the A/C goes into the board is the one to check first. If the problem is not the transformer or fuse, it could be any number of things in the power supply. If the main fuse is blown it will do the same thing.

If you can determain if it is the power transformer I can give you the part number. I can also tell you how to check the transformer if you have a multimeter. Just let me know how you want to resolve this. It is reccomended that you take it to a service center for repair if you do not have the proper tools to repair it. If it is the transformer, the only tools you need are a number 2 phillips screwdriver and multimeter or ohm meter. The repair cost is around $200 to $250 for the transformer depending on the mark up of the part and the labor rates of the service center.

Some service centers give free estimate's or charge a small fee for an estimate. This might be a good alternative to find out if it is the transformer if you cannot check it yourself. Just don't tell them you are fixing it yourself and just want to know what to replace. I have seen some places sabotage equipment to teach people a lesson for trying to do it themselves. I have never done that, but I have seen it before.

If you have found this information helpful a rating of FixYa would be appreciated. It is the only reward I get for helping peple for free, and great way for you to say thanks.

Let me know if you need more help,

Dave

Denon unable to stay on

It's likely that you have shorted some speaker outputs, I had that problem and sorted it. Unfortunately it does mean replacing some output transistors..the devices are dificult to get to just to add insult to injury. They are the devices that are mounted directly onto the large heatsink and solder connected to the bottom circuit board. You only have to change the matched pair that you have blown....tricky to identify which ones without some electronics knowledge. The power output section does have some fuses to protect it but sadly these do not appear to be fast enough to stop "one" from damaging the power output stage if you unfortunately short outputs. The transistors are available from Farnell, use pin compatible replacements SAP15N and SAP15P.....all the best. Doctor Bill

Optical inputs

Hi boltbob

Strange one... . The unit has'nt just lost its presets for optical input selection by chance. Most receivers have a volatile memory for user presets that can reset input settings to default when the unit has been unplugged for a period of time. This may mean that your amp is not looking at the optical inputs for that source. If it has correctly selected the optical inputs, then something common to all optical inputs has failed, maybe a a buffer stage between optics, D/A or Source switching stages.

Try disconnecting the unit from the wall socket for 10 mins to do a hard reset and see if that has any resolve to the issue.

Other than that, its out with the multi meter anbd do some DC checks about the optical , buffer and d/a stages. Try the reset and let me know how you go.

Remote

I tend to agree that the LED is loose on the foil connections. You can certainly test it by shining it at a camcorder and observing the viewfinder. Most, if not all, video units can "see" the light coming from the led if it is functioning. An easy way to test this is to use another remote that you know is working and do the 'corder test. ....accordianman

A sound spike should not heat up the unit enough to shut it down. There is another problem. What is the time frame for the shutdown? Is it only after the unit has been running for a while?

Denon receiver follow up

Well I do not know how is on your model, usually it is all on the same mainboard. if its transistors you change the transistors , or there may be a thermic swithch that turn system off.
You should also consider that may be a fault on some of the control chipset.
A problem of this kind won't be an easy DIY unless you have a good background.
I do not have diagrams or schematics for your model, If I find some, I will send them tomorrow.

Leave your denon unplugged overnight, place it away from other devices, until you fix the problem.

Give me your location if you also need directions for local service support.

I will post back tomorrow

Potentiometer and output transistors

Try sony for the transistors, they use them too, but expect a handling and delivery charge from all suppliers these days. It sounds like a standard 330 ohm preset pot by your descriptions. There are more than a dozen varients to chose from. You will need to compare the lead setup and pitch to get the correct replacement. I use Farnell electronics to mix and match odd replacements. Good luck

Turns it self off with a sparking noise in the speakers

The unit has a built in protection mode if a fault occurs in the speaker wiring. If its in protection mode the power button light will flash and display goes blank. Try disconnecting all speakers and see if it stays on, if so it could be a shorted speaker wire or bad speaker.

Size of fuse for Denon dra 697

The Denon DRA-697CI stereo receiver typically uses a 250V, 2.5A fuse. However, it's always a good idea to consult the user manual or check the label near the power input on the device itself to confirm the exact fuse size and specifications for your particular model. Using the correct fuse size is important for safety and to prevent damage to the receiver. If you're unsure, you can also contact Denon customer support for assistance.

I have a old Denon DP-47F turntable, if I pressed the Arm lifter button, the tonearm can be slowly rising, but if Down, the tonearm will suddenly go down, no buffering. Please ask how to fix it.

Check and clean the dampening piston(s) associated with the raise / lower mechanism. The silicon oil may have dried up or leaked out.
