You should open the top up so you can see whats going on inside. take a good look at the pcb and see if its going "black" in any places(not a good sign) Remove any paper lying inside the unit...check and see if its paper, the pcb, or the motor that is "smoking"...have you ever lubricated the cutting blades.???

If you"unplugged" the machine and let it cool down for about 1/2 hour and it still wont work then you have probably fried either the pcb inside or the motor itself...normally the pcb will go first.

You have probably "fried" the pcb inside the machine.....this is a "consumer" machine...no more than 5 mins ON then 10 Mins OFF to let it cool down.....you should only shred about 70% of the MAX rating for the machine.

You say the motor runs...but can you see if the cutting shafts are turning???? if they are not then you have probably stripped a gear...open it up to determine which gear ( after unplugging machine of course.) then give Royal a call at 1-800-524-0799 for parts availability and prices.

Unless the gears are damaged the gears dont jam themselv's....this is a cross cut machine have you ever oiled it.??? Put some lightweight oil on a sheet of paper and run it thro' the machine; do this a couple of times to start...if you use the machine a lot then do this once per week at least and only run the machine at about 70% of its rated capacity...less strain on the motor and parts and the unit will last longer.

IF YOU CAN'T GRASP THE PAPER AND PULL IT BACKWARDS WHILE YOU TRY PUTTING MACHINE IN REVERSE....THEN IT HAS TO BE DONE THE HARD WAY BY TAKING TOP OFF MACHINE AND TRYING TO TURN GEARS "BACKWARDS " BY HAND.
ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG A SHREDDER WHEN OPENING IT UP.

POSSIBLY BROKEN GEAR INSIDE...YOU'LL HAVE TO TAKE COVER OFF TO SEE WHATS WRONG.

Look down the throat from above the shredder. You should see a small switch, likely in the middle, but perhaps off to one side. Take a narrow piece of paper, and slide it into the throat activating the switch, turning the motor on. You should see 2 toothed bars rotating, but I bet that only 1 is rotating, both may not be turning. This is indicative of broken drive linkage between the motor and the shredder bars. Not exactly economical to replace due to cost, but the broken part of the drive linkage is likely a sheared pin.

Over load light comes on only when you have either put too thick a bundle of paper or too hard. So reduce the thickness according to the hardness of the paper. Start with a few sheets of paper only. then increase the number of sheets till you find the shredder is struggling hard to do the job. That is your limit. If you exceed this limit then it would stop shredding and may even burn the motor ultimately.

if you answer no to the following question, then I do know your solution: Q: When you unplug the unit immediately after your action of "When those paper complete the shredder does not turn off."...and then plug it back in, does the shredder STILL continue to operate? if no, then the solution is to disassemble the feeder unit and manually unclog the paper sensor.

IF YOU GET A PIECE OF THICK PAPER OR AN ENVELOPE AND FEDD THAT THROUGH IT SHOULD CLEAR IT FOR YOU YOU COULD OPEN THE DOOR AND FEED THE PAPER UP FROM THE BOTTOM BY CHEATING THE DOOOR SWITCH BY PUTTING A PIECE OF PAPER IN THE SLOT FOR THE ACTUATOR THAT WILL LET THE MOTOR RUN FOR YOU...hOPE THIS HELPS a

I have seen what u have going on, it is caused by the shredder drums drive worm gear being broken, this happens allot on machines that are used allot, in other words a high duty cycle, also if u jammed the machine then that breaks the gear drive that turns the shredders.

Put in less thicknesses. Also, put them in in the center. If they are near the edge and they are at an angle, they will flip over themselves and double the thickness.
It is designed for 12 sheets of paper. They probably figure on 18 pound paper, not 20. Adjust what you put in to allow for this.

UNPLUG THE SHREDDER.

If this model has electronic eyes (optics) to control the auto-start/stop function and you oil the cutters, chances are the optics are contaminated with shredder oil. Take a cotton swab with a little alchohol and clean and dry the optics.

If you removed the top cover, it is a possibility that you disconnected the wires from the PC Board.

Press shift button until screen says shift lock. Then push menu/up triangle. Toggle down to option 4 for contrast :)
