I have the same problem on my AVR 1550 - its been bugging me for ages then it works again, then it doesn't ...

My device is AVR 645, but AVR 745 has the same power regulator board and you could check, if the problem is there.
(AVR 645 volume blue light was not pulsating)
When device is turned on, it shows all display indicators,
no blue light on volume button and no response to any remote or front panel buttons.
Reason for failure:
No 3.3V and 5VD voltages.
I checked bridge rectifier D701 on power regulator board.
One of the diodes was shorted. Also fuse F702 was blown.
Original D701 is KBU6G, but because regulator board is a bit difficult to get out, I decided to use KBU8G. The only difference is Amps rating 6A versus 8A.
Be sure to use SR-5-3.15A fuse to replace F702 and use heat sink paste (you know where) when board is reinstalled.
There is large heatsink in the middle of the receiver. Power regulator board is mounted on the right side of that heatsink. It is down there near the front panel and to get it out you most probably first have
to remove two PCBs hindering access to some regulator component screws. Here are pictures to clarify situation:

There is a control on the receiver for digital input - make sure it is set that way and not in the analog position.

Check your audio settings on the main menu of the receiver. The audio input should be set to "auto" Next, make sure you don't have the unit in "6 channel input" mode or "direct" mode. This is usually a small button on the front panel. If you check all this and you still have a problem, post a comment and I will help you troubleshoot some more. Hope this helps

There is a possible poor air ventilation. Make sure the amplifier has plenty of free space around to ventilate. A good idea is to open the top cover of the amplifier and clean the inner heatsinks using air under pressure. Take care not to remove any cable connectors during this procedure. Keep in mind that using 2 pair of speakers always increase the amplifier temperature.

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'nekkid'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as another possible root cause for intermittent shutdown.

Only the front speakers failing? All others ok?

There is NO configuration that would have NO front speakers.

Go back to basics, open the manual and use test tones for speaker verification.

Does this happen at modest or very high volumes? If the latter, is the amp getting hot? Just the two speakers? If yes, ease up. If NO, get it fixed.

I have an HK AVR140 all of the displays work, even shows when a digital connection from the Blu-Ray player is connected but no audio comes from the speakers! I found some information that HK does not have DC protection so when there is a problem muting Circuit is initiated on the main Amp. I called HK and they want me to send it in to a service dept that is not close at all. Any ideas? Or is there a way to by-pass the muting circuit somehow?

With the power plug out of the wall, remove the screws that hold the case,so you can get to the
switch. It may have just gotten cocked and stuck
in the spring mechanism. See if you can fiddle with
it lightly, to get it unstuck. Good luck.

ensure that you have the reciver connected to a display monitor e.g t.v. set, there you'l be able to make all the necessary ammendments.use the video out or use the HDMI out to connect to your t.v.
which speakers are using for the avr 142?
