Flashing LED light

Did you drop it? If you did, bust it out of the shell and take the actual hard-drive out. Then get a slaver (aka: a disk cradle/dock). Those run about $20 at most. Otherwise, there might be something wrong with the cord or your USB drive.

My 320gb hard is showing

You bios is limiting the hard drive. If you can update your Bios, the update should correct this. Very common in older IDE based XP installs.

The other option is that you set a partition size on it and just need to make the partition larger.

Flashing leds on both the power adapter and the external drive

Hello

Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

  1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
  2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
  3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.

Kind Regards
Andrea

Only 100gb of my 200gb hardrive are showing

Welcome to the wonderful world of windows disk size limitations.

What you are running into is the Windows 137GB Capacity Barrier AKA the 48-bit Logical Block Addressing Support for ATA (IDE), Serial ATA or ATAPI disc drives.

In English this means windows will only “acknowledge” between 127 and 137 Gig of a disk drive without some updates.

In most cases after he latest Service Packs are installed, any additional gigabytes will show up as unallocated space on the drive and you can create a second partition with the Windows disk management tools. Unfortunately this will mean that you have 2 partitions on the drive (if you placed your os on the drive or partitioned it before the updates were installed.).

If this is a secondary drive (in other words your OS is on a different disk drive), install all of the system updates first, you should then be able to format the entire drive as one partition.

Hardrive help!

Unfortunately this is a little like closing the gate after the horse has bolted. as there is a possibility that the files you copy onto the drive may be infected with the virus. however, It is usuall that External drives are not configured for use (as the application for the drive's use is varied) it is up to the user to partition and format the drive. if you are using win XP it sh a case of connecting the drive (the hardware should be detected) install drivers if neccesary. Then the Disk needs to be prepared, Right Click "MY Computer" and select MANAGE. This should take you to a management window. Select "Disk Management" Under "Storage" from the "tree" on the left of the window. You should now see on the top right a list of named partitions, and below you should see the partition maps of the drives connected to the system. your 100 GB disk should be shown here, as an unformatted unpartitioned disk, once this disk is selected you can partition it any way you like however most choose a single partition, once the disk is partitioned you need to format the partition, FAT32 is the most portable. once this is done the disk should now have a Drive letter, This can be changed if required. yould now be able to access the disk :) `

Power supply Adaptor

Just to be sure, is it the power supply that is faulty, or the harddrive 'case'?

If you have a separate power supply, you can find a new one for something like 15-20$

Seagate Portable Hard drive 4TB, part number 2N1AP6-500

Hi, Please put your computer into safe mode before attempting to connect to the hard drive again. Safe mode turns some feature off when activated so whatever program is forcing the shutdown might have be paused when connecting to the external hard drive. Also, try connecting the hard drive to a non-laptop intermediary device and then connecting that device to your computer and attempting to access the hard drive folder within the intermediary drive. Thank you.
