Top 20 Reddy Heater-170,000 BTU Kerosene Deluxe - Page 7 Questions & Answers

I can't answer about moth balls cleaning the wick but off the top of my head I would not try it as I do not know just what gases your unit would give off. I use kerosene heaters and find that after about 5 tanks of fuel I put on a pair of household rubber gloves, remove the chimney and turn the wick all the way up. Then I roll the wick between my fingers and get the hard carbon off. Once I have the wick clean I use the shop vac to vacuum it all up. I have found that by doing this my wick is never dirty, I do not get any smoke and the wicks last more than 20 years. Probably a better idea than moth balls. Let me know how you make out.

When you say the heater is coming on does it actually ignite or is the motor just running until the safety circuit kicks it off? The air pump on you heater should blow at 3.5 to 4 psi which runs up to the nozzle which is a venturi which sucks the fuel out of the tank. The motor will generally run for 20 to 30 seconds trying to ignite. If the flame sensor does not sufficient flame during the time it shuts the motor off. Check these items and let me know what you find.

I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4124129-yearly_maintenance_reddy_heaters which explains the the problem you probably have and where to get the parts to get your unit running like new. Most portable heater parts are the same. Also DESA went into bankruptcy but many dealers still sell parts. This site also sells manuals. It is all in my tip. Let me know if you need more help.

Make sure blower motor is operating and air filters in
back are clean. Clean the oil nozzle and make sure fuel line is air tight. If you still dont think you are getting fuel. Gently pull fuel line hose off of tank and make sure it isclear.

It sounds like you are having an airflow problem since it lights fine with the cover off. You need to adjust the airflow the burner or look for some type of obstruction.

sounds like a clogged orifice or obstruction in the the fuel line

There is a flame sensor inside the burner unit. The sensor is like a photo cell that must see the light of the flame or it will tell the burner control to stop the power. You need to see if there is a soot film on the lense of the sensor and make sure the sensor is aimed straight. If the sensor is clean and aimed straight (and the problem persists) then there may be a clogged nozzle that is giving a poor flame and the sensor does not see a good flame therefore shuts down the unit. If the nozzle is at fault, then you for sure need to replace the oil filter. New nozzles are $4-8 and the size & spray angle is stamped on the nozzle. If there is still a problem, then you need to see if the pump is giving approx. 100psi pressure, then finally (the last step) would be to replace the burner control $60. Goodluck< Macgivor

Make sure the filters in the back are clean and make sure the fuel line
from the tank to the nozzle are tight. You might also check to make
sure nozzle is clean. Make sure fan is operational. If it has spark ignition make sure that is cleaned up as well

Check the fuel and tank. If it has been a while since fuel has been refilled, or it has sat without, you may have water in the tank.

Make sure the fuel is not contaminated, and is k 1 ,if it is diesel fuel in it,and it is not made for diesel ,then that is the problem, also use a anti gel additive for gelling in the fuel,it doesn`t have to be that cool for gelling.

Sounds like you need to adjust the airflow so that it is getting enough air to burn.
