Speedlight SB-600 Display flashing.

Hi all. I have a problem with the LCD display constantly flashing on my SB-600. It has been doing this for months. It seems to work OK, but is annoying. Any Ideas? Thanks Boomer03.

My SB 600 is doing the exact same thing. I used Nikon's online support service and this is the response I got: "I would try doing the 2 button reset on the flash and then see if that helps. Also disconnect any battery packs you may have connected especially if its a third party battery pack. If none of the above work then please service the speedlight" Sounds like they don't know what it is, either. I tried the reset to no avail. I'm not sure I want to send it in to have it fixed, since it does seem to be working. But you're right, it's annoying.

Dropped my SB600

Hi - it's been sent to the service center, so I'll find out what is wrong soon enough, but if anyone would like to have an educated guess....

All "life signs" are good but flash won't fire. Charge light is on, screen display good, navigation buttons working, but only a slight 'click' when the manual 'flash' button is pressed on the body. And no fire in any mode when the flash is mounted on the camera.

Thanks.......Jon

It is possible, but highly unlikely considering that there is no real way to purchase the correct Xenon tube outside of Nikon's supply chain. Also, it would depend on your skill level in dealing with high voltage flash tubes - the electronic flash has a little high voltage power supply that charges up some capacitors (the high pitched sound you hear while it is recycling). When you fire the flash you discharge the capacitors across the Xenon tube which generates a plasma and gives of a pulse light. So, the truth is, if you are asking the question, it is probably not within your capabilities - though if you want to give it a shot, please make sure you discharge everything before attempting to do so. Even after several days, there will still be an appreciable voltage present unless Nikon has done something to protect you (doubtful). Also, you would need to pay extreme attention to contamination from skin oils, etc., so that you don't wind up ruining the high voltage part or blackening the bulb that you put in.

If you have a homeowners or renters insurance policy and the deductible is low enough, I believe that this would fall under one of those.

Good luck.

Nikon Sb600 does not fire every time

I have a new sb600 and it does not fire every time. I have changed batteries. I use rechargeables...and when the salesperson told me that it might be my batteries - I bought another brand of batteries. But after 10 or 15 shots in 10 minutes the flash fies only sporadically. What is wrong?

I struggled with this one but then, on the basis that if all else fails read the manual I found the answer. It's soooo simple. The wide-flash adapter is set. That's the little pull-out screen at the top of the flash which folds down over the flash-head. If it's pulled forward it activates the wide angle setting automatically. Push it back in and you'll be fine. tony k

  1. On the SB 600, activate the custom settings menu by pressing the ZOOM and '-' buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
  2. In the custom settings menu, set the Wireless Remote Flash option (indicated by a curled arrowhead) to 'ON' (use + and - buttons to toggle between options)
  3. Set the flash mode to Master (do not set it as AA or A)
  4. Press Mode button and select one of the four channels available (ensure that you set the camera also on this channel)
  5. On the D80, from custom settings menu, select Built-in-flash
  6. Set the built-in-flash to '--' if you do not want the flash to show up in the scene
  7. Set the mode of the group to i-TTL (this menu can be used to control multiple flashes in different groups. since you are using only one remote flash, select the group you have set in the SB600)
  8. Set the channel to the same as in step 4
Now you are ready to use the remote off-camera flash.

Flash on Nikon SB600 won't turn on

Flash unit will not turn on. Batteries are fresh. Examination of the battery compartment reveal that one of the positive battery slot appears to not have the "spring" that the other does. This battery sits lower in its slot, which would appear to prevent it from meeting the contact point on the cover when it is closed. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

there are tabs in the battery wells you may have to put something in there to bend it back up so it will make both contacts on top and the bottom
