Nikon Speedlight SB-600 TTL Flash - Page 8 Questions & Answers
Nikon sb600 flash
Auto zoom only works when on the hot shoe of the camera. You also need to make sure that its in the righht mode (make sure that above the word Zoom on the display it doesn't have a "m").
Oh and of course you have to have a CLS (Creative LIghting System) compatible camera.
Flash will not turn on.
Check the battery contacts are clean and not corroded, apart from that you have covered the most obvious cause. Probably need to be sent off for repair.
I might be interested in this if you decide to sell.

SB 600 Not resetting...
my sb 600 speedlight won't turn on. Do I need to reset it? It has fresh batteries. Never been dropped
Everything looks good but no flash
Most likely the bulb has blown, need a replacement bulb (more correctly "Tube"), you can get them but you will need to be good with a soldering iron and good at dismantling small compact things....Nikon would be very expensive to repair.
SU-800 and SB-600 line of sight
Remember that the SU-800 works by sending out an infra red beam as the trigger pulse, when out doors available light can swamp the sensor on the side of the flash with too much light, therefore the flash cannot "see" the pulse from the SU-800.
Also if you refer to the manual, you will find nikon recommends working within approx 30 / 60 degree angle of the sensor, so if you were working behind the camera with the flash it would have had even more trouble.
As you found when you used your hand you strengthened the output beam for the flash to be able to pick up the pulsed output beam. You may need to create some kind of hood, to place in front of the SU-800 to direct the beam in the direction you need it to work.
Hope this helps

Will not show ready light
Is the flash powering on?
Are the batteries installed correctly?
Try a fresh set of batteries.
If that does not work, you will need to send it in for service.
SB 600 wont turn on
Did you overheat it?
I know this is basic, but are you sure the batteries are good and installed correctly?
SB flash does not synk with d90
Are you waiting for the flash to be ready before you fire the first photo?
What shutter speed are you using? Are you trying to sync at too high a shutter speed?
Sb600 wireless mode not working...
Remember that even though sb-600 is wireless, it is based on infrared. This usually means having a clear line-of-sight between flash commander and remote flash. Any object that gets in way can block signal from flash commander. Weak batteries in flash will also cause remote operation to be sporadic.
SB 600 front reflection glass has became little bit black & malte
Are you Using Energizer rechargeables? I switched from 15min charge 2500mah energizers to 2000mah duracells and the problem hasnt happened again I think it does it the most when you have the shutter speed below I think it is 1/125. just something I guess Nikon wont own up to. Maybe see if there is a Firmware update
