Monitor shuts off but green light stays on

I know that this is going to sound crazy because it sounded crazy to me...but my monitor was doing the exact same thing and it was really getting to me, so I came up with an idea...somewhere in my brain I decided that turning down the brightness would help...so I turned the brightness down to about 57, and I have not had a problem since. I know all of these problems were posted a long time ago...but I hope that this helps someone out and saves them some money. I have a Dell LCD monitor and it fixed the problem right away.

Where do I plug the blue cord into a Dell desktop monitor circa 2006? I think the cord may be in the wrong place and I am struggling to remove it. If it is correct, then something else is wrong.

it is in the correct place..There are 2 little thumbscrews that are the same color blue and you cant tell they are screws use a flat head screwdriver and unscrew them. hope this helps

Dell E177FPc flat screen monitor

If its the standard type of small clicky on/off button( (usually a black dot with silver casing - but you cannot see that unless your screen is dismantled), and its no longer doing the click bit, it's probably just broken inside unfortunatly.

They are very much prone to breaking up inside. If the screen can be taken apart, you may be able to buy a new button off the internet, but they are often 'surface-mounted' buttons now, which makes them very small and hard to resolder to the board again.

If the button can be felt still making a click, you may be able to spray some cleaning spray (such as SERVISOL or WD40) into the switch, as they sometimes just get dirty inside.
(make sure its turned off before spraying anything like that tho as its all highly flammable).

If you are trying to detach the screen edging, they are usually secured by 2 or 4 screws on the rear (sometimes they may be hidden behind the actual base/stand). After that, usea large flat bladed screwdriver (or something like that), to seperate the front & rear casings. The reason for starting at the bottom is that if you slip or the casing is very awkward and starts to crack as you work out how it comes apart, the marks will be hidden from view later :)

Some of the casings click apart easily like this, but others can take some force, and may even snap the small plastic tags inside as it cracks open - but that it up to the fixer if you wish to take that chance. The screws holding it together are usually more than enough anyway.

Monitor works in safe mode only

Monitor has no idea what mode the computer is in. Safe mode uses the default lowest common denominator video settings. I think I would try reinstalling the display adapter drivers.

E173fp screen black

The most common problems with these units are caused by bad capacitors in the power supply board. Here is a link to several repair guides that cover the different E173FP models. You can determine which model you have by looking at the last letter of the model name it should either be c, f, or bhttp://www.ccl-la.com/blog/index.php/category/monitor-repair/dell-monitor-repair/

Dell E173fp monitor went black and green LED light

hughiii, Read page 16 of my fixya profile. There is a response to another E173FP you should read and then do more reading about other brands of monitors with same symptom. Will you be doing the tear-down and inspecting the power supply? After you have done the research (reading) and seen some videos on YOUTUBE, get back here on fixya and let us know what you have decided to do. 12fixlouie

My monitor comes on for

I think you need to verify that the lamps are bad since it is delicate works to remove, replace and solder the lamps wires and put them back together.
This is where I get my lamps from: http://www.lcdparts.net
You need to check the fuse, transistors, caps, and solder joints on the power supply/inverter board.
http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/DELL/Dell%20E173FPb/

Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/ Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

I hit the power button, the screen goes black and

It does that on another PC also?
Flashing power LED is usually caused by shorted transistors (4, C5706/5707) in the backlights inverter circuits, you need to make sure there are no cold solder joints on the board otherwise you may blow out the new transistors.
