Screen is blank, power light is blinking green. Disconnecting the video connection makes no difference. A substitute monitor works OK, so definitely seems to be a monitor problem. Any ideas? Many thanks.
This problem is very often caused by dry electrolytic capacitors on the inverter board. If you have some skill with soldering you could try to change them. When buying new ones ask for LOW-ESR capacitors for switching mode power supplies (SMPS) and 105°C, they are a little bit more expensive than normal electrolytic capacitors, but are designed for this aplications so they lasts more. Normal el. caps will also works fine so when you cannot buy LOW-ESR for SMPS use normal ones.

I have a dell e172fp 17 inch . suddenly when I tried to wake it up from power saver mode, it flashed a second and went blank. it keeps blinking green light on the power button. the monitor blinks white once in a while. when i press the power button hard, it shows the screen once. Does anyone know what is the reason for this problem ?
I buy and sell these monitors (Dell E17FP) the problem is with the transisters (Q739, Q740, Q759, Q760) they short out and the monitor will just blink on and off. You have to desolder them and test them with a simple battery and light circuit. The reason they blow is because of the dirty solder joints by the transformers. If only on pair of backlights work the problem maybe transisters Q751, Q743. I home this answers your questions.

The lock, unlock symbol keep appearing in the middle of the screen. Also, the "Main Menu" for the monitor keeps appearing and disapearing in the middle of the screen. I have tried pushing and holding the menu button on the front of the monitor but cannot get these items to stop flashing on my screen. How do I get these items to stop popping up.
5-22-09 Same problem last month. I had the problem a year ago for a month, then it stopped, reappearing this last month. Last week, I finally called support...I was accidentally transferred to a Dell "internal" technical support department...happily a very diligent technician spent a bit of time with me for free...for same problem, even though he confirmed I was over a year past all warranties. He confirmed this was a monitor problem (not virus, malware, etc.). He also confirmed their standard "guidance"/solution for this monitor issue (if under warrantee) is to replace the monitor (i.e. not attempt to fix it). New monitor needed. But problem again gone for last 10 days. So, when fully irritated, buy new monitor.

I have tried pushing and holding the menu button on the front of the monitor but cannot get these items to stop flashing on my screen. How do I get these items to stop popping up. The brightness/contrast adjustment window pops up on it's own. It then scrolls through at a high speed. Sometimes I can remove it by turning off the monitor for a moment, sometimes not. Ant suggestions?
The up/down button on your flat panel is stuck. Please contact Dell Technical Support to have the monitor replaced if its still within warranty.

My monitor keeps going into power save mode
Hello,
Its not power saver mode, when the display goes black and the power light starts flashing that is a good indication that the power supply is about to die. The Dell E172 monitors are noted for this problem. We have step by step repair guides posted on our web site at: www.ccl-la.com Click on the monitor repair link. The Dell E172 series actually has several sub models, check your specific model, the sticker on the back will have either E172FPb, E172FPc, E172FPf. We have guides for all 3 versions posted.
I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.

Dell E172FPb LCD Monitor blinking power button light. I have looked in the threads on this site and have identified what parts are recommended to be replaced namely 3 Amp fuse, 4 C5707 transistors(Q759, Q760, Q734 + Q740) 2 MOSFET transistirs(Q743 + Q751)
As I was given this monitor freely I see this as an opportunity for my first repair project. I am confident this is a realistic goal but would like some advice on soldering. What iron do I use? What solder do I use? What precautions do I take to ptotect board from heat damage? Where could I get the required transistor parts in UK?
Any advice and encouragement would be appreciated. I am sure this is the place to ask.
i can't tell you where to get the parts but i can help with the soldering information.
use 60/40 resin core solder
a 20 watt iron
to prevent over heating, you can try a desoldering iron or a special blower desolder gun. you can try adding extra solder to the part before trying to use a desoldering iron, this will help the desoldering iron **** out the old solder easier.

my monitor is blank it just keeps saying self check its a dell flat screen
Hi,
If it shows "Self test feature check" the cable (VGA / DVi ) is unlplugged on the computer/ tower. Check the cables it may be loose. If not, try replacing the VGA/DVi cables. The LCD is good since it was able to display the self test feature check.
Hope this helps.

the main menu of the monitor keeps popping up ( brightness/ contrast). selection of exit is almost impossible because it toggles randomly through selections at a high speed. menu,+ and - keys on the monitor are some times none responsive.
sugars_30, You or electronics technician will need to (most likely) fix the units "switch-mode-power-supply" !!! Do some extensive reading in my fixya profile and follow the links to other "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp" back-lit lcd monitor tech's here on fixya. They and I already have written tons of stuff that will help you to understand the problem you have. When "strange stuff" starts happening with a ccfl lcd display, the first place to look is at the innerds of the monitor. Just do some reading!!! 12fixlouie

e157925 inverter board won't light up lcd screen What are the usual problem components?
Typical failures in DELL LCD monitors are: cold solder joints, bad fuse (still has continuity with high resistance), shorted MOSFET/B-POLAR transistors, bad caps, lamps assmblies. Basic LCD monitor troubleshooting guide: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague Capacitors kit: http://lcdalternatives.auctivacommerce.com/ he can make you a set of caps for you.

my dell monitor usb ports don't work anyone how to fix it?
Please check if the monitor's usb port is connected to the tower, the monitor only acts like a USB hub / junction. If it is connected then disconnect it from the existing USB port and connect it to a different USB port. Please refer to the monitor manual link given below
