Spec of the monitor http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Gateway-Gateway-Monitor-FPD1760
It will need the VGA cable (3-row/15-pin D-SUB), you need to look at your laptop monitor port to see what you have for the output.

And you will need to set the laptop video signal to be at the native resolution of this monitor, which is 1280 x 1024 @60Hz.

My screen will not turn

Check the power supply main fuse and the DC output voltages.
If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Please take the computer to another socket (mains) and try it without the computer (cpu). I hope you press the power button properly. Could be the problem with the socket or with the plugs on the socket. Move monitors' power button need to keep pressed for few seconds and then release when you see the light on it.

If you have no idea how to unplug the cable (display) from the monitor to the computer, let me give you some hints, there should be two insulated (covered) screws on either side of the cable at the point where it's connected to the back of the computer cpu. Turn the (turn the screw toward left to release and right to fit) screw handle with you hand and you'll be able to pull it out.

Make sure the power cable is properly fitted and power is coming through it.

Let's me know if this doesn't help.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

It sounds more like a monitor hardware problem than anything else being wrong, but the definitive answer would be to try it on another PC.

If it does the same you know it's the monitor; if not investigate your PC.

My monitor shut off and wont come back on

Do you have a yellow light on it?
Is this a monitor that has a power adapter to run it? If so, check the voltage coming to the monitor. If the voltage is low or there is no power, then you have found the problem.
If the voltage is correct and if you can get video by attaching a different monitor, then your monitor is bad.

No power. will not turn on.

Hello

On/off switches do go bad. The "No Signal" is more likely caused by a loose cable, cable or electronic failure. Generally the refusal to turn on or slow turn on is caused by capacitors on the power supply board which have changed value. Take it to a local repair person or see my website: www.micromendllc.com

Good Luck

I have dell monitor model e196fpi

The power supply/a capactiro in the monitor may have blown. If either of those are the case then you'd be better off buying a new one. Try a different outlet and if that doesn't work then the monitor is probably toast.

My monitor is flashing pretty colors.

Either a bad video card or cable. Wiggle the cable at the connection points. I would think video card. If it's internal, and you are sure it's a bad internal video, a cheap video card can be a quick check. See if a tech friend has a standard PCI video card to borrow. Let someone knowledgeable install it. Must set BIOS to run video from card installed.
