KDS Radius RAD-7 17" Flat Panel LCD Monitor - Answered Questions & Fixed issues

I bought a used KDS 17" color monitor, Rad-7,

I agree that the overheat was the supply being too small. Not only the voltage rating is wrong, but I'd bet the amperage is alsotoo low for correct operation. Check this link. I have bought power bricks from them for laptops, monitors, and power tools - all good quality without breaking the bank. They ship pretty quickly as well. http://generalsaving.com/productfile/G_LCD12V3A/1000/G_LCD12V3A_z_0157.php

Monitor stays black

First make sure you have the monitor cables correct. Try another monitor hopefully works so you can go into your device manager and make sure the right drivers are loaded and that your monitor is listed. You may do some research because I'm not sure but I think your monitor uses a back light & an inverter which is replaceable and not usually a difficult job or to expensive. Labor of coarse cost more than the parts. Monitors use a video card or on board video so make sure these are not the problem.
Are you sure its not in wake mode in the bios?
If you shine a light on the monitor when the comp. is on and the monitor light is on you may be able to see your screen. That would be the back light.
When if all and what was going on when it stopped working?

If the top of the cap is puffed or there is electrolyte leaking it needs to be replaced.

The power light doesnt come on

Check the caps and voltages in the power supply (you should have +5vdc (for logic) and +12~18vdc (for back lights).
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, blown fuses, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

The monitor comes on then cuts off for no

Open up the back of the monitor and check the power supply board for any bad capacitors, if you see any that are leaking or slightly domed at the top they need to replaced.

When replacing capacitors check the type of cap you are dealing with, if they are barrel shape they are normally electrolytic and need to go into the board the right way, the caps are normally marked with a (-) sign going down along one side which is the negative leg of the componant.

Also check the voltage rating and farrads marked as a upside down (U) so if the cap is 47 micro farrad then it needs to be replaced with the same value. The voltage differs, you dont have to have exactly the same voltage as long as it is more or the same than stated on the side of the cap, if you do use a lower voltage cap it will explode.

The screen color is off. It looks yellow, pink

Try changing the connecting cable. You seem to be connecting it with a composite cable which might have loose pins.

Monitor displaying yellow tint

Try this. Worked for me immediately, including with PhotoShop

  1. Go to Color Management (in Vista, just click the Windows Orb / Start Search & type in Color Management)
  2. On Devices, select your display (repeat if you have multiple ones... at least I did). e.g., Syncmaster ....
  3. Check the box: Use my settings for this device
  4. Select any and all profiles you have and Remove them.
Check to see if that fixed it. You may need to restart. I didn't have to.

My monitor stays on for 6 seconds

Hello,

You have a monitor with a common problem. After a few years some LCD monitors will blow a power supply. The problem is caused by parts called capacitors overheating in the confined space of he monitor. If you are good at electronics repair/soldering you can usually fix he problem. Check out a few pictures on my web site www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htmYou can take the back cover off your monitor and look for the bad parts, replace any that look like the pictues and your monitor should work fine. The capacitors do need to be installed with the correct + and -connections, note the stripe on the old one and insert the new one the same way. If you don't want to try the repair yourself we offer a repair service for $35 plus shipping. I hope this helps, if so please rate my solution.

Distorted picture

It's possible your video card or monitor is going bad. Which type of monitor do you have? If it's a CRT then my guess is....monitor.
Check all your cables and connections first.
If possible hook up a known working monitor to rule out memory or video card problems.Monitors have a refresh rate but I don't
recommend doing this without supervision or complete knowledge.
Check to make sure you don't have any interference close to your monitor. Interference would/could be: magnets/speakers/radio's/televisions/microwaves (not sure about micros.
If your have a LCD monitor I'm not sure all these suggestions apply.

Dont know how to turn on

The monitor has and adapter type power cord that plugs into the computer end of the VGA cable. Look for a small round hole at the PC end of the cable.

KDS Moniter

Have you checked your video card or adapter?
Check the settings on the monitor itself.
If you didn't find the problem go into system properties (windows logo + pause)/hardware/device manager. Expand monitor/right click and see if your new monitor is listed. Is there a yellow or red symbol next to it? This would mean a problem, then right click symbol/properties and error will be shown.
Could be a memory issue.
Don't forget to try a "working monitor". This will narrow it down a bit.
