You may have a defective mode switch or the problem could be an electronic issue. The camera will need to be disassembled to trouble shoot the problem to be certain.
This can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not really a user serviceable problem and should be done by a qualified service technician.

Is there a way a
It seams that this camcorder uses digital 8 media for storage ..and it does record digital ..so the transfer should not be a problem ..but it has no slot for any kind of external memory so the direct record to a external drive or flash is not possible ...but ..the way to upload the footage is simple and you just have to use a firewire cable ..and capture the footage on a video manager like windows movie maker..
The procedure is just like any other tape camcorder...just plug the cable ..let the computer see the camera ..and than use the video manager to import or capture the video while it is played back ..
If your operation system does not have a movie maker ..use the one recommended by Sony on the support site ..or any other which has the capacity to capture from device ..
The only way to capture directly to the computer's hdd is also with a video manager..but the camera needs to have the ability to stream ...To try it and see if it is able to ..just plug it with the wirefire...open the movie maker..and choose to capture from device and see if you have any image on the preview..If it does..it means it is capable to stream and capture in real time on the movie maker..than be saved as a video file on the hdd..
I would like to convert
I think you are expecting camera to covert VCR analog video-audio signal into digital so it can be record in Macbook?
Camcorder will not do this job and you need to hookup VCR with DVD Recorder to burn DVD of VHS tape.

I have a Sony Handycam
I've never fully troubleshot a camcorder, but I would think they probably have a fusible link as protection, however, you should make sure the battery terminas inside the camcorder are clean (use a qtip and alcohol, or a pencil eraser). I would also suspect the on/off button as being oxidized or broken. You can open it up and try to check these things, but it might take some tracing out the circuitry without a schematic, which would be difficult to obtain.
You might check on Ebay for a working unit- it might be easier, or an alternative.
Good luck, and hope this helps.
Sony handycam dcr-trv310e code error
This is the most common problem in Sony camcorders of various models. It is most likely a problem with a rubber bushing on the inside. It is an easy fix but it is very hard to explain with out pictures. Here is a link to a GREAT tutorial however, it is written in Japanese. All you need to do is follow the excellent pictures and this should take care of the problem. The plastic tube on the inside of the rubber bushing is the most likely cause so just follow the pictures. He uses a drinking straw to fix this. Good luck. This has fixed my camera perfectly!!!!!!!!!
