Any movement recorded in HD mode is not clear.

HD mode images may appear to move somewhat stiffly compared with SD mode or DV mode images. This is because they are shot at a rate of 30 frames per second compared with the 60 frames per second for the SD or DV mode images. The movie is shot at 24 frames per second, and looks good. So HD mode can have the same feel as a movie material. For smooth movement during video clips, we recommend you minimize rapid-panning or avoid shooting fast-moving subjects. Should you wish to record more natural motion in the picture, we recommend setting a slower shutter speed, or changing the recording mode to SD or DV.

Charging battaries oversea.

The battery chargers that are included with JVC camcorders sold in the U.S. are designed to operate on power from 110 to 240 Volts at 50 or 60 Cycles AC. All that is needed to use the battery charger overseas is a plug adapter to connect into a foreign electrical outlet. These are generally available from a store which carries electrical supplies.

How can I play back a tape produced on the GRHD1U?

Tapes may be played back by the camera itself. If the tape was shot in the 720P (HD) or 480P (SD) modes, it cannot be played back on a standard DV VCR or camera. Tapes shot in the 480i (DV) mode are completely compatible and can be played back on any DV VCR/camera. In addition, tapes can be dubbed to a JVC HD DVHS VCR via the firewire connector.

Do I need any special cables to view or record the footage?

No. The GRHD1U includes a component cable. Another breakout cable provides composite, S-video and audio left and right. For dubbing the footage to a DVHS VCR or computer, a standard 4 to 4 or 4 to 6 (camera has a 4 pin connector built in) pins firewire cable (not supplied) is required.

You will need all the pixels the camera can produce so set the camera for 1600 x 1200 Fine. That should produce a good 4 x 6 print. I can't help with auto/manual as I do not know what they do on that camera.

With which computer operating systems is the GRHD1 compatible?

The GRHD1 has three sections: HD/SD (high definition), DV (digital camcorder) and DSC (digital still camera). The still section, (thru USB), should work with Windows ME, 2000, XP or MAC. HD/SD would only work properly with Windows XP. DV section would work with Windows XP as well as MAC. Please note that GRHD1 is ONLY fully compatible with Windows XP. All other operating systems may, also, work but it is not guaranteed.

If this is an USB connection, I'd try another USB plug that you know works. Remember that MOTHERBOARD DRIVERS are often an issue. Some will accept a Windows Update driver and this happens.

What is the significance of the “U”at the end of the model number?

The “U” at the end of the model number stands for a product designed for sale and use in the United States. There will be some listings that will not show the “U”. If this product is for sale in the United States, it is safe to presume that these are the identical products. Note: that any other suffix (such as “E” ) on a “Consumer Camera” sold in the United States is considered “Gray Market”, and may not be covered by warranty in the United States.
