Error code 31:23 indicates a fault in the tape transport system. This can be caused by several things including the transmission not engaging properly, a missing pinch roller, a defective clutch in the take-up or a faulty rotary mode switch and will require disassembly to repair. This can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not really a user serviceable problem and should be looked at by a qualified technician. Sony is pretty secretive about the :23 code. It can't be found anywhere. However, to service the C:31 code, Sony recommends you do the following:

  1. Turn off the camcorder.
  2. Remove the battery or disconnect the AC power adapter for 60 seconds.
  3. Insert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter.
  4. Turn on the camcorder.
  5. If the error message appears, service may be required.
If your camcorder still shows the same error code, then you'll have to send in your camcorder for service.

This is usually caused by an oxidized, misaligned or defective Audio/Video drum. You can try running a cleaning tape through the camera. If this does not solve the problem the camera will need to be serviced by a qualified service technician.

Does your Macbook have a firewire port. Many do not. Connect with a firewire cable.
This is the only way.

There is a dew sensor in the camcorder that triggers the condesation warning. I am 100% sure that the sensor is malfunctioning. Getting the same replaced by an authorized camera tech should resolve this problem. Please get me your zipcode so that I can get you a list of techs in your area.

You need to purchase a Firewire (also known as a 1394) cable. Make sure the connector on the camera end is the small connector and the connector on the computer end is the large connector. Monoprice is a great place to get cables. Here is a link to the cable you want:

4P to 6P Firewire (1394) Cable

You then need to use "capture" software do actually capture the Digital 8 tapes. This is built into most editing programs, like Studio (from Pinnacle). There is also a really good shareware capture program called Scenalyzer:

Scenalyzer Web Site

that I highly recommend. Once you have the cable and the capture software, you will be able to transfer the video. Digital 8 video will consume 13 GBytes of hard drive space for each hour of video. You then edit this, and when you are finished, you "render" the result to MPEG-2 to make a DVD, or to MP4 if you want to upload to YouTube.
