The vhs camcorder has very complex mechanics and hold many traps for the inexperienced. I suggest you begin by obtaining a standard vhs recorder and remove the cover to expose the interior and then study it. You will find the engineering and interior geography of your camcorder similar. The round shiny barrel-shaped thing contains the record and playback video heads and the sound head is separate and looks like a larger version of what can be seen in a standard audio cassette recorder. The interior must be extremely clean, the drive belts in good condition and the clutches and rubber rollers also in good order.

It is over 18 years old - the probability is that some of the electronic components have deteriorated to such an extent that it is no longer usable.

I had one of those and it was so out dated can't get parts. My battery burnt out and could not find a replacement.

You can get videos from this camera, or any analogue video source, into a computer. You just have to play them into an analogue video interface port. These are available as expansion slot cards for a PC, or sometimes as a USB plug-in interface. They will come with drivers and probably software to digitise the video input and record it to a file. Lots of third party video editing software will also be able to accept the input from this kind of port. You don't need any "driver" related to the camera, it is just a video signal source. The connecting leads will be standard RCA signal plugs, like the ones you use to connect to a TV or VHS recorder. You probably already have a lead for this.

Once you have the video on the computer, you will need DVD "Authoring" and burning software, which will usually come as part of the same package. You can download such software for free from the internet- my first stop would be www.download.com.

Here's a link to the manual for your camcorder. Take a look at page 11. There are composite (dont confuse with component) audio and video outputs. If your TV has the same type of inputs, then a direct connection between the TV and camcorder is possible. Otherwise, you will need a composite video converter to change the format to a specific channel, usually 3 or 4.

On the VHS adapter, try changing the battery (also in the manual as well) to restore operation.

Underneath the black battery, when you take it off to charge, there is another small battery compartment it holds a round battery about an inch in diameter. try replacing it. that might be the problem. hope it works out for you.

Question edited into written English with punctuation. The lens isn't black, the viewfinder is black. Connect it to a television or computer and see if playback and live recording is working. In that way you know the optics and the electronics are working. The viewfinder is a small LCD display screen with a magnifying glass in front of it. Take it to your local camera shop, they will know someone that still repairs these camcorders. Hi, You can first check for any debris in the video tape player and double check that no settings are stopping the tape from playing (ie a stuck rewind button) . Otherwise, please use the services of geeksquad/bestbuy to refurbish your vcr player. You might also check out BandH (?) video to see if they can refurbish your video tape player. Thank you.

Probably an age related issue. A repair is possible but not ecconomic.

I don't know anything about the vhs camera - other than they produce superior quality, when they work ok. It would be reasonable to assume the tape transport mechanism would be the same as in a vhs video recorder. I remember an engineer telling me there is a post or protrusion containing a light source and sensor that sometimes fails. The purpose of this is to detect a cassette has been properly loaded into the machine and if it isn't working the machine won't work or only partly work. I think the camera is worth saving but I strongly suggest such specialist equipment should be entrusted to a suitably experienced professional specialist.

It appears to have a built-in USB connector, use that.

You can download a manual for almost any equipment by Googling the make and model followed by the word Manual, then follow the appropriate link(s).

This was manufactured in 1999 - this makes it at least 17 years old. If I were you, I would wish it a happy retirement, and replace it with a more up-to-date camcorder with better optics, a digital image capture system, and which is far lighter in weight and more portable.

RCA 4462 is actually the catalogue number for a vinyl LP by Brian Auger - are you sure you have quoted the correct model number ?
