I have a old CRT
Well, if the adjustment buttons don't work, then probably the control unit in the monitor is broken, or a key is stuck. If the control unit needs servicing, I doubt if it's feasible to have it repaired, given the fact that it's an old monitor and new or used nice slim LCD monitors can be purchased cheaply nowadays.

If a monitor won't turn on, the problem can usually be traced to the power supply. Check if the fuse is blown or if the capacitors have bulged and failed. Failed capacitors are the most common problem with LCD monitors. If any of the capacitors are blown, would recomend that they all be replaced and that usually get it going again. There is a company that sells replacement capacitors for any monitor.

Monitor displays blue box 'no
Check all connections, cable is hopefully good. Then go into maybe the video card is either faulty or that maybe the monitor you want to use cant use a setting that the PC is trying to use (1280x1024 from the pc where the monitor can only go 800x600 for example) also check the Hz rating and make sure that the computers on the lowest Hz setting. Maybe the monitor can't handle the Hz the computer wants to use.
Assuming your in windows... and have no other means of getting to the settings try booting the system.. as soon as it 'beep's tap the F8 key several times and you should be able to get into the safe mode option. after you get in there get into the video settings and try to adjust the resolution and save it. after that you can reboot and it should come up as what you saved.. then you can tinker with the setting to figure out what the monitor can do. Next time try to give a model number and maker of the monitor. :)

Monitor makes a cracking frying sound as it booted
The bulb in those older Monitors dont last too long. Many times whenever you hear that sound its like the tungsten filament burning out or breaking. That's the crackling sound you hear as it boots up. My suggestion would be to get another monitor at this point in time.

I have a Proview (Product #PRO558, Model #568). I
Hello, Linda.
Give this a try:
Hold down the Fn key and press the function key with "CRT/LCD" or picture of a CRT (usually F4 or F8). Toggle through and hopefully the Proview will work.
It also could be a problem with the settings.
Check the BIOS on the PC and make sure the video is set to Default to your video
card rather than AGP or integrated.
It's also a possibility that the VGA port is not working.
Hope this helps.
