It seems power supply section of camcorder got problem and most probably couple of chip fuses in power supply section located on main circuit board are blown.
Camcorder will take apart to inspect/ replace bad chip fuses and this should be done by camera technician as it is not user level work.

Your probably correct on this. I have a similar issue with my Sony and the camera dock. my charger works but I can't download the video from the camera because of the dock. Is there a DC in plug on the camera? mine has a small plug that is coverd in rubber on the back side and on the bottom. Look and see if you have this plug, you can just plug the wire going to the dock into the camera and charge it that way.

Most of the time this happens is when the tape in in the save mode. check to see if this is the case before inserting.

Your Button cell back up battery is dead. If you remove you main batter you will see a smallflip door towards the top of the cammera. Replace the Cr1616 button cell battery. Without this battery your camera will not remember the current settings like the date. Batteries are available for $5 to $7. Quick and easy.
