HP Jornada 540 Pocket PC Questions & Answers
If you do a new, clean install of XP in 2018, one would be missing hundreds of updates from Microsoft that would be very hard if not impossible to get. Some of those updates might apply to software that you want to use in conjunction with Windows XP. And if it is an older PC, you might not be able to find driver support for the particular make/model, and XP might not have the drivers you need. How many times have you heard someone say, "I just reinstalled XP, but now I am missing drivers?"
This could be part of your trouble, because even if your XP updated all the way up to April 2014, you could still be missing HP updates provided by HP/Microsoft through Windows Update.
Since Microsoft has not supported XP since April 2014, I would recommend not using it anymore in 2018.

Sounds like the shock from being dropped may have caused some internal connections to the screen to become loose causing the stripes or blank screen. It is also possible something might have been damaged. It sounds more like a loose connection and not any damage, but I don't know for sure. My suggestion would be to get it looked at by a professional.

As best as I reemember there is no way to do it as the OS and apps are burned into ROM. The 568 was the only Jornada that could be software updated.

First I'd try a hard reset (tiny red button at the back), if that doesn't help, it is likely to be the battery.

The Jornada 540 should have come with Outlook 2000. It works fine in Windows XP. When you Sync your computer and Jornada 560, the contact information should transfer from one to the other until both have the same contact information.
Under the Tools pulldown on Activesync, select Options. Sync Options allows you to sync your Contacts by checking the box next to it. The next time you sync, all of your contacts from your 560 will be in your Outlook.
When you get your battery replaced, just sync again and all of the contacts in your Outlook should transfer back to your 560.
The other option is to get a Compact Flash memory card and backup your info onto that. Its much easier. Simply restore your info from your memory card when the battery is replaced.
Hope that helped you.

Sorry, the Jornada 540 has the OS in ROM and is not upgradable. Additionally, the 540 uses the SH3 processor which Microsoft does not support in the more recent versions of the OS.
