Sounds like it is time to clean or replace your print head. It is also possible that the cartridge that you have is defunct. Try installing a new one. If that fixes your problem, the issue was the cartridge.

Have the memory inside the printer tested. Add as much printer memory as you can to the printer to speed it up.

The 901 ink cartridge doesn't have a chip in it

There should be an HP utility on your computer that will allow you to run a print head test. This should show you if the color portion of the printer is working. If it is then likely the driver on your computer has been set for grayscale printing only.

Try pressing the letter multiple times to get UPPERCASE. Example: Press "a" once for "a". Press "a" multiple times for "A"

Beyond replacing the print heads which are not available for this unit there is little to do. HP, Epson and Canon do not have parts for their ink based unit. Only Brother has part for their ink based units.

Have you cleaned the scanner part? Auto-feed uses a "line scanner" in front of the flat-bed scanner. Clean that, and likely the lines will be gone.

Scan one side of document, print that side. Flip document and scan, then follow printer directions for printing other side of document on first printed document.
