two things to consider.
1. If the blinking is fast (like more than two blinks per second) then the printer is damaged. Either the main controller board is fried or the carriage/ink controller is damaged.
2. if the blinking is slow ( 1 blink per second) this means that either of your cartridges is busted. remove the black cartridge then close the top cover. If the blinking stops, then the black ink is the culprit. If not, replace the black then remove the other cartridge. THis means that one of your cartridge needs to be replaced.

In my experience, i believe that you still have a small piece of paper stuck in the machine.

Please check for the cartridges and try to make copies.

Normally this is the symbol that your printer is not on-line either for the reasons: 1) printer not turned on; 2) printer not connected properly; 3) printer driver damaged; - need to reinstall the printer driver with the CD provided; 4) print spooler service not activated in windows - need to enable the print spooler service in window console service;

have you changed the inks recently, with generic? refills?sometimes the print heads on those can fail. if still problems persist try uninstall/ re-install of your HP printer software.

It insists there is a Cartridge problem on the Printer............ In this Case take out the Paper from the Paper Feed Tray........ Unplug the Power Supply from the Printer.......... Remove both the Cartridges from the Printer.......... Now take a size 10 Envelope fold it so that it should become like a thin long strip........ Now Insert that Envelope on the left side corner of the Printer and move it from right to left and left to right as fast as u can for about 10 times.......... Now Insert the Ordinary Papers onto the Printer and insert both the catridges and Turn on the Printer...... Blinking Stopped...........Issue Resolved....... Still Blinking: Remove both the Cartridges take a Paper Towel turn the catridges direction so that u can see a Copper plate with small boxes on it....... Just wipe it twice or thrice with the Paper Towel.......... Now insert it and Power on the Printer and see whether the Lights are still blinking if it is still blinking...... Get the Printer Replaced!!!!!

Open the door, left side above on off switch there is contact for door sensing switch, press that check carriage assm moving right side?.. *if yes insert small peace of paper in it, use it..But if you want to replace the cartridges remove the paper object.** if carriage assm not moving open the upper cover check the switch..

You can download your driver for free on Hp's website www.hp.com. Click on support and then downloads and enter your make and model of printer. Then follow the instructions to download and install the files on your pc.

This may help:
Included with the HP Driver package is a live update system that loads up cartridge numbers to make sure genuine ones are being used, and to be intrusive as possible if not!!.
You used to have a choice during the driver installation to dis-able this but in the latest drivers you can not un-tick the box and it needs to be un-installed from the add-remove programs section of control panel in windows 7.
Try Un-Installing this software, loading the network printer and monitor the queue, it may be this update sending the print jobs.

Is the paper tray in the correct position. I did that more than once on mine. Hope that helps..

I have a HP Deskjet 3940 printer. And similarly to this problem here I had a paper jam that would not clear, despite removing all the paper that was stuck in it, and following all 4 steps stated on the HP website. Such as taking the back cover off and blowing dust away and turning it off and on, etc.

None of these steps worked for me and consequently I couldnt get any new jobs to print - kept saying 'paper jam'. I was about to head down the shop to buy a new printer when i tried one last thing, which HAS fixed the problem!

I put in a large stack of paper onto the feeder. and then pushed it forcefully in and out repeatedly. To my amazement this has solved the paper jam. As a very last resort, might be worth trying this?
