Try this:
Turn off the machine
Take the toner/cartridges out of the machine
Unplug the power cord from the wall
Wait 30 sec
Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall (Make sure the printer is plugged into the wall and not a surge protector)
Insert the toner/cartridges back into the printer
Turn it on and test
Won't print dark enough
Forget buying a new toner cartridge and don't bother re-installing anything - This is a power supply problem - The electrolytic capacitors fade away after a few years of power on and the high voltage to the printing engine drops too low.I tried a new toner cartridge - no help - re-installed drivers - no help.If you can handle a soldering iron or know a friend who can, replace the following capacitors on the power supply board on the LHS (power cord side). Make sure you use low impedance 105 degree power supply types. Warning - high voltage !!! power cord out and wait 30 minutes before touching anything.C374 341 503 529 (47uF/35V), C526 (1uf/50V), C506 (0.47uF/35V), C515 (100uf/50V). All the others tested fine in mine. Also make sure you install them the correct way around! Now I have "black as black can be" prints just like new and I can set print density back to 2 not 5.enjoy ;-)
Black vertical lines in copies
You need to clean the glass. Open up the feeder and you have a large piece of glass for scanning and to the left a smaller piece of glass that it uses to scan from the feeder. Clean this smaller piece of glass; even the slightest smudge can leave a black streak.

Printing too light
The quality of print is related to cartridge. Once you try the letters in BOLD format, Change cartridge.
My 8 yr old hp LaserJet 3030 printer cartridge is printing extremely light. Just got a new cartridge and it is not much better! I can barely see the ink on the paper. Any ideas how to fix?
