Probably a defective thermostat. It is mounted to to the bottom of the heating surface and are mostly round in size. The thermostats are temperature specific so make sure you get the right one. A part number on the bad part is very helpful in locating an exact replacement.

Take the bread pan out of the machine. Start a kneading cycle and see if the noise is still there. If yes then motor spindle is bent, the motor is bad or the belts are pulleys need attention. If the noise you heard is not as bad, then it is the seal on the bread pan ( the seal and shaft that the paddle goes on).
