The power adapter could be bad BUT also the jack it plugs into may be bad. It will have a switch to disconnect the battery when adapter is plugged in.

You need to get a voltmeter and check the output of the adapter. OFTEN the cable beaks where it flexes. Sometimes the cable can be spliced, but DO be careful to not reverse the wires.

Lol, sounds like that iPod sucked the power out of your house. Just kidding. If it is plugged into a wall outlet, make sure that the conections are not bent or warped in any way (remeber this stuff is very fragile so look for the smallest stuff). If it is plugged into one of those multi outlet devils, make sure that is not too clogged up. For those I always use the Male Bathroom Ediquate rule, never stand (nor plug) next to a guy in another urinal.

They are disposable items, very poorly designed and bad quality. I had a great set early 90's, they failed so I bought another set around 2010. The hissed even when turned off so I donated them!. I bought a pair of Bowers and Wilkins MM1. A whole different ball game in quality, sound and a lifetime warranty. The problem is getting into them as they have secret hidden plastic catches. Go around the seam in the body with a spudger to look for the catches.

A constant low hum is a sign of a power supply issue. You need to check the capacitors that filter the ripple current and you need to check the diodes that convert ac to dc
