You probably can't. Not without damaging the speaker. Altec is not a major brand, its all probably bonded and glued together by way of easy manufacture.

Verify that the speakers are plugged into the correct color coded plug in back. Verify that the speakers are plugged into a power source Verify that the speakers are on Verify that the speakers are turned up on the actual speakers Verify that your sound is not muted in windows (Control Panel > Hardware and Sound (vista) or just Sounds in XP > Adjust system volume. You can also try opening Windows Media Player and unmuting/turning volume up there. Try several files, mp3s, videos. make sure its working. If you still have no sound try updating the drivers for your sound card, you can figure out what type of sound card you have from the control panel, system, device manager, sound. then just go to that companys website and search for your card to download the latest.
If you do all of this you should have working sound... if you still dont then that would indicate the speakers or a cable is defective, you may want to do some trial and error with known good cables/speakers.

The 4.1 speakers you has, and output sound , depend on the sound card you has on your laptop. If you has inside the laptop a sound card 5.1 you whould not have problems get it sound, BUT you have to set on multimedia and sound for 4.1 according.
you only have one output sound on your laptop, so you have to use 2 speakers or buy a splitter and get 2 speakers sound.
you also, can buy a pcmcia sound card, 5.1 from creative labs, to solve this. but check if your speakers of course sound of.

Very easy just plug the jack at the back of the computer. In the sound card it is color coded. So plug it in the green one.

Before taking things apart I'll be very surprised if someone has the same speaker system in bits somewhere An electronics guy would trace the wire back to it's source to decide what it's being used for.
