Once you get it loose, you should be able to unscrew with your fingers. Put the rag around filter before putting the pliers on it to prevent gouges and deep scratches in the chrome. IF you have a dishwasher, you can clean the screen filter on top basket of dishwasher if you have one. IF the screen filter looks bad to you, just replace it. Go to any hardware store ,take the screen filter with you and get help finding the right one. Once you have a replacement, hand screw it back on as tight as you can.
