Since my last post, I have found the method to reset the counter and stop the error message that the waste ink absorber is ALMOST full. I am not sure if it will work once the error becomes the waste ink absorber IS full.

After cleaning the ink absorbers as instructed in my last post, remove the print head by following the instructions which can be found on-line at www.usa.canon.com. Click on support and enter your model information. Then in the search box enter "remove print head."

After removing the print head, perform the following instructions:
1. With the power turned off, while pressing the Resume/Cancel button, press and hold the Power button. DO NOT release the buttons.
2. While holding the Power button, release the Resume/Cancel button. DO NOT release the Power button.
3. While holding the Power button, press the Resume/Control button 2 times, and then release both the Power and Resume/Cancel buttons.
4. When the Power LED remains green, press the Resume/Cancel button 4 times.
5. Turn the printer off.
6. Turn the printer back on and install the printer head with on-line instructions as described above.

You are now ready to print,

Use isoproply alcohol on the actual heads of the printer. Use it with a q-tip. Also, use the cleaning solution kits that come with some refill kits and plug it into the printer.

If it doesn't print after doing this cleaning, then the problem is with the jets on the printer.

If the feed roller in the back wobbles a lot, the end could be broken, but usually I find that something has fallen in the back stopping the paper. The best way to look for something fallen in is to use a flashlight and small mirror.

The waste ink absorber is inside under the printer, you need a shop to replace them and reset the counter.

This printer has an ink absorber that takes in ink during the printing and print head cleaning processes. The cleaning process is necessary in order to keep the print head nozzles from becoming clogged. Over the life of the printer, the amount of ink that the ink absorber has absorbed is calculated by the printer. Eventually, after substantial use, the printer will enter an error condition when the ink absorber is nearly full. At this point, printing is still possible by pressing the <Resume> button on the printer. To protect the printer from damage, you will not be able to print at all once the ink absorber is full.
Canon recommends having the printer serviced before the absorber becomes full. We are aware that there are many "do-it-yourself" Web sites that offer instructions for making this repair. Replacing the ink absorber is a complicated and potentially messy procedure. Even if the ink absorber is successfully changed, the ink absorber counter must be reset. Be aware that if you attempt this procedure, it is at your own risk.

I think you can just set the Paper Type in your Printer's "Preferences" page. You can choose a "manufacturer-defined" paper type that you know is "thicker" t

u shud clean the black cartridge pins and connectors on printer.

Error 5100 is a carriage error, usually I find grease on the encoder strip, it's the clear strip with black bars behind the carriage assembly It can be cleaned with a Q-tip. Sometimes the purge unit can be jammed on the right side and the carriage can't go all the way to the right.

Your printhead is plugged and needs cleaning. If you remove the inks and then the printhead, you can wet and fold a paper towel and just dab the printhead gently on the wet towel. When you see a solid black line on the paper towel your printing should be improved.

If using aftermarket inks you sometimes have to rap them on a paper towel to break an air lock.If you see ink coming out after rapping them try to print again.If nothing comes out you may have a bad print head or purge pump.
Try cleaning the head (without cartridges)in a 10-20% ammonia warm water mixture for 30-45 min.
Completely dry the head before returning it to printer.

You will need to take this into a certified repair tech. You can contact Canon through their website for the closest repair center. It should only cost you around $50 to $100 for them to replace the ink absorber pad.
