What is the best upgrade cpu for a compaq presario sr5110nx 32 bit vista O.S... ATHLON 64 (single core) without having to go to 64 bit, and/or new drivers ?

The 400W PSU is going to limit your CPU selection to dual-core at best, although you might be able to get away with a higher-end dual-core CPU if your RAM is not ECC and not dual-channel, and you're not running anything serious in terms of a graphics or sound card or a SCSI array. Given your current setup I'd really look for a 1.6Ghz dual-core Athlon which has a decent amount of KB in its Level 1 and Level 2 cache, but 3MB for its Level 3 cache. Anything beyond that ballpark of a CPU upgrade is certainly well within the bounds of diminishing returns, and you should look at getting a new PSU, motherboard, and probably RAM (I'm guessing you're using DDR2 RAM currently). Compaq Presario SR1050NX Won't Turn On. . .

You're typing like you have been working tirelessly on the problem. In fact there is no user name, lol!Okay.....relax...........just ease back, and put your hands behind your head, and close your eyes.............think about clouds floating across in the sky.Better?Alright.Your Power Supply is bad. Weak voltage power rail.Replace it.Don't think so? Cool. That's what I'm here for. To teach.Have a multimeter?A) If ALL of the LED's were on they would use less than 1 Watt of power.B) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts of power.C) A typical Processor can use 51 to 125 Watts of power. Just depends on what Processor it is. (Older Intel Pentium I, II, and III, uses less than 51 Watts. Some older AMD's do also)Primer:You press the Power On button. The plastic assembly of the Power On button in turn presses against a Power On switch,http://www.directron.com/atxswitch.htmlThe Power On switch is a Momentary Contact Switch. When briefly closed the Power On switch completes a circuit. The Soft Power On circuit. When the Power Supply is plugged into power, there is a constant 5 Volts (DC) present. The 5 Volt Standby power.Pressing the Power On button redirects the 5 Volt Standby power, in the Power Supply. This 'excites' the Power Supply, and turns it on.(Soft Power On circuit)The first chipset (I.C.) to receive power is the BIOS chipset. The Basic Input/Output System program is initialized.BIOS looks to see what devices are installed, does a Ram Memory count, TURNS the Processor on, and hands the computer over to the Operating System.(WinXP and Win7 are two examples of an O/S)Primer over.1) http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=405454&2) http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00595250&tmp_task=useCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=405454FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions2a) http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=125&prodSeriesId=3433073&prodTypeId=12454&objectID=c01358034(Yes, I know. Slightly different computer case. Principles still apply)3) Don't think you will be hearing any BIOS Beep Codes, because there isn't enough power, lol!For additional questions please post in a Comment.Regards, joecoolvette(If Power Supply power were dynamite, your Power Supply wouldn't have enough power to bl-ow it's nose)

I have a compaq presario

Presarios normally let you access BIOS setup by pressing F10 as soon as the Compaq logo pops up on the screen when starting it. I've read that F1 is the key on some pre-2006 Presarios. Pressing the F10 key multiple times immediately after starting can be helpful.

Try admin or just hit enter. If not remove the battery from the mother board for 5 minutes and see whether it helps. If you haven't entered a password on BIOS there shouldn't be any problem. Also try deleting if you have any other users accounts on the system. Good Luck!

Will a AMD Athlon 64 processor work in a Compaq

No Donnie, the motherboard for the Compaq Presario SR1050NX won't support an AMD Athlon 64 processor.

The reason why is;
A) The Processor socket on the SR1050NX's motherboard is a Socket A. (Also known as Socket 462)

Hp Support > Compaq Presario SR1050NX > Specifications > Motherboard Specifications >

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00072236&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=405454

CPU = Central Processing Unit. Another term used is Microprocessor, or Processor for short.
Look to the right of the CPU heading:
Socket A (Processor socket)

This is the Socket A processor socket used on your motherboard,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_A

You can click on the photo of the Socket A processor socket, to the upper Right, to enlarge.

The AMD Athlon 64 line of processors came out after the Socket A, and used the Socket 939 first.
Then on to the Socket AM2.
(Socket 940 for some models)

How do i replace back

The BIOS battery in most desktop motherboards is a coin size lithium battery approx. 20mm in diameter. The most common type used is a CR2030 3volt lithium battery.
To release the battery, press the metal clip to the side and the battery should pop up.

I have the same SR1050NX compaq computer with the same startup problem. I suspect this from a code seeded in the system, so performed the system recovery for several times. The problem gradually came back, automatic shutting down with loger interval. I thought the bug is in the recovery system. But the floppy drive in the cmos is disabled without choice to be activated. So, I couldn't perform FDISK at DOS mode. For this computer, I wonder anyone knows how to activate the drive for boot order besides through the setup window.

Thanks very much.

My computer won't boot-I hear the fans running but

This usually means that there is a serious problem that should be looked at closely by a technician. For example, this could be related to a bad power supply, a faulty or dislodged processor, or even a motherboard failure. I could suggest checking these areas, but it is best left to a trained technician.

Installed new memory and now wont boot up. Static

A few thing can be wrong.
  • Wrong speed memory - Make sure it is both xxxGHZ, same as your old memory (Take the old memory to the computer store)
  • Memory limit with each slot (Max memory divided by # slots)
  • Overall memory limit (visit the mfg spedific model's page)
  • Incompatable/Bad memory
  • Mix your old and new memory (1 old / 1 new) If the new is incompatable the old (in slot1) should work and an odd amount of ram displays

Broken Spring on Door for Floppy Disk

Look at the back of the computer.Take off the side door, it will be the one with screw in the middle of the door. After you remove the screw, take off the door and then where the front panel is you'll see some tabs that are exposed, go ahead and push on the tabs, there will be a a few on each side. Once enough of them are pushed in, you should be able to remove the front panel. At this point the floppy drive will be exposed and you can remove the broken door with the screw. Then once you do this, you can put the front panel back on and you should be able to run the floppy drive like normal.

HP/Compaq has had alot of power supply issues with this series of computers. Do you have another power supply you can try in this system? If the light is flashing rapidly, it is usually a power supply. Fairly cheap and easy to replace.
