Dell Axim PDA backup battery

There is a small wafer type battery inside the case. Similar to a CMOS battery in a PC. You need to replace it. You can do it yourself if you have the right tools, i.e. tork drivers. Battery is around $4.00 .

Axim 5 upgrade path

Microsoft is well aware of the popularity of the iPAQ 3600 upgrades made available and that is one reason they mandated a Flash ROM with the new Pocket PC 2002 hardware. I am pretty sure MS will make an upgrade path available to the OEMs. It will then be up to Dell, Compaq and friends to make it available to the customer. Dell has always been good about that. As for the ROM size. The current Pocket PC 2002 image is 22MB. I have no idea how big the next one is or even when it will be out! Could be 2003 or 2004. MS has traditionally upgraded every 18 months or so on their PDA OS since 1998. IF that pattern holds true, 18 months from Oct 2001 would be spring 2003. We'll see. Ok, back to the ROM. Most Pocket PC 2002's have a 32MB ROM though a few have a 48. I think the 48 is primarliy to handle a big user file storage area in the ROM. I would be surprised if the next PPC increased more than 45% in size. It could though, but if I had to bet, though, I'd say 32MB would be plenty. Still - I'd look at the 48MB model for other reasons. 33% faster processor, 64MB RAM, included cradle.

AXIM X5

To copy word documents, simply connect your device to your computer, click "Explorer" in ActiveSync, and then transfer the word document from your desktop to your Pocket PC. ActiveSync will do the conversion from Word to Pocket Word for you. As for wireless internet service, you need a wireless Compact Flash card and data service. Sprint is one of the few companies that offers this, and there is also the Pocket Spider from Enfora which can connect on some wireless networks.

Power Button

Hi Monkeycdo,

There's a program that gives you the Windows XP shutdown window to turn the Axim off (http://classic.pocketgear.com/download.asp?product_id=6666)
the main page is: http://freewareppc.com/utilities/shutdownwindowsxpstyle.shtml

However, you can also adjust the power settings to turn the unit off after a certain time of inactivity.

If the power on is a problem, the power control settings have an option to "Turn on Device" if a program button is pressed. Check that option and in the future you can press the bottom buttons on the front and the unit should come on (you will have to close the program window that you requested when you pressed the button);

let me know how this works (grandgregojunk [at] yahoo.com) or if you have any questions.

Good luck,
Greg

Axim X5 Screen Issue

I have seen this before. It may or may not be the same problem but sometimes a crack can form in the digitizer (touch screen part of the display). The only way to fix it is to replace it. You can find them on-line or on ebay.

I have on scree this

98% of all Axim X5's with screen alignment problems can be fixed
using these instructions. The design of the unit eventually wears
through the ribbon connector to the screen, and causes it to be
grounded, which gives you the sympton of always needing alignment.
A 3mm piece of electrical tape will usually eliminate the problem
for several years. This is fairly easy if you have tiny screwdrivers,
but I assume no responsibility if this doesn't work or something breaks.

1. Backup data with ActiveSync's Backup/Restore function under "Tools"
on the desktop PC. If you use Vista's Windows Mobile Device Center,
it's under Mobile Device Settings-->more-->Backup and Restore.
If you use a browser, delete the temp cache, cookies and history files.
2. Remove main battery to uncover two screws, and remove backup battery
and any memory cards or blanks.
3. Carefully unstick the four rubber feet on the back, uncovering four
more screws.
4. Very slowly unstick the two rubber side panels, making sure most of the
sticky stuff stays on the rubber grip.
5. Use a tiny phillips screwdriver to take out the six screws on the back.
6. Carefully separate the front and the back halves of the case. A little
prying with a tiny flat screwdriver might help, especially at the bottom.
The half covering the top might have to be moved further up so the top
will clear the headphone jack. The front should have only the speaker
wire connected to it, which can easily be pulled up and off.
7. Locate the small mylar cable at the bottom of the front of the screen.
You'll see a nick or dent in the insulation right over the left wire.
Take a tiny piece of electrical tape slightly larger than the nick and
put it on. Don't push too hard on the cable.
8. Put the case back together, reversing the directions above. Plug the
speaker wire back in with the black wire on the bottom, red wire on top.
Put the top half back on starting at the top of the PDA by putting the
dark plastic part over the headphone jack first. Put the bottom half
back on starting at the bottom of the PDA near the sync connector by
putting the two easy-to-break snap-in nubs in place first.

Good luck!

Installing San Disk Wireless Lan Card for Dell AXIM 5

Actually the reason why it's saying that is because that card is not compatible with the Dell Axim X5 because if it was you wouldn't get that response. I'm still looking for a Wi-Fi card for mine as well because I ordered the P500 Wi-Fi compact flash card from Dell then come to find out it wasn't compatible with the Axim X5, it was discontinued.

Sdio Wireless Lan Card Wlan 802.11b

The blank plastic is NOT to be used while other cards. I am assuming you are talking about the SD card slot on the side (black plastic filler) There should be no movement of the SD card when in place.
If you are talking about the CF card slot on the top of the Axim, again the blank plastic is a dust cover when no card is in place and is not used with cards inserted. There is a bit of open area on one side of the card. Carefull with the pins at the bottom and be sure to insert correctly. Again there should be no movement of the card once inserted fully.
Don't know what you are quoting from the manual. I still have mine and the only thing I see similar to your quote is to "align the tab on the back of the CF card with the notch in the CF slot.." This is to make sure you have the front and back correct and for removal of the card (by grasping the ridge/tab)
