In case of your HP laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper.
The female power socket on
I had the same problem with mine. There is a very detailed video on how to replace that power connector online. I've seen it. It shows you every single tiny step, screw by screw even. It is MUCH cheaper to do it yourself! Otherwise, you know the other solution. The Shop. Argh. If you can afford, go for that though, it's obviously less stressful to hire someone else to do it than doing it yourself. BUT, that video is truly excellent! It would be nearly impossible to make a mistake, unless you are just careless, as it is honestly very detailed, and explains as it goes. Just be careful, don't get impatient and try shortcuts. Good luck! As you can tell, I didn't do mine yet, but I should. I just use desktop most of the time anyway. Maybe I just talked myself into giving it a try. :) BTW, the part you need is also clear on that video. Google it. :) Good luck! Not that you'll need it. :)

How do I get access
Notebooks and laptops have built in sound and not a separate card, unless it is extremely old. I expect the headphone socket is faulty due to the knock. I also suspect the software will show sound but nothing will play due to the broken socket.
These are fairly cheap to replace. Take it to a qualified Dell dealer for service.

Dell D505 BIOS Reset
Generally, all you need to do is get on to Dell Support and get in a chat with one of their people and tell them that you are locked out by a BIOS password, and needed to get around it. After they verify that you are the owner of the laptop, they should give you a password that gets you through it.

Did it read before? If it did then try cleaning the eye with a little alcohol and a q-tip.Be sure to lightly dampen the q-tip make sure it isn't soaked. Then ever so gently rub the eye counter clock wise then clock wise.Wait a`minute or so then do it again.Try inserting a DVD or CD and see if it will now read it.If it doesn't then do it one more time.If after the repetitions of cleaning it still doesn't read, then maybe the DVD/CD your using could be corrupt.Try different dics, known to work, to test the reading of the drive. If the drive, after the above steps are taken still doesn't read then the drive may need to be replaced.Mind you that this should help if it read CDs before.

We ran a typical
Dell Latitude D500 Battery of tests, including games, applications, and a couple other areas. Time constraints limited the amount of testing we could get done before the NDA lift (and it's already a few hours late), but we will be providing a follow-up article with further testing and information. That said, if there are any specific areas that you'd like to see tested, feel free to e-mail me or leave a comment.

If you are able to start the computer in safe mode, be sure to schedule a disk check and let it run. But first, I would recommend a system restore back to when the computer was working.
