It is possible that the other end of your power adaptor is defective or just loose. Tighten it securely and try to test if it is emitting voltages by using a multi-tester.

It can also be that there is a problem with the connection form your power adaptor going to the main board of your laptop.

This is a very technical problem so I suggest you let a laptop technician look at it.

Visit the Dell Drivers Downloads websites and download the lastest BIOS version for the notebook.

See if you can get an MS-DOS version. Boot the system using an MS-DOS repair disk. then attach the disk with the BIOS setup by USB.

If you don't see an MS-DOS version, you may have to format and install or do a fresh install of your operating system (or a lower version that supported the BIOS). As soon as windows is re-installed, run the windows version you downloaded from the source disk you saved it.

YOu can reset bios password with 2 method.
(1) open back cover of laptop then find motherbord .Pull cmos cell from motherbord for 15 minutes then again put it in it's position .then it not ask for password.
(2)You can clear password with jumper settings find jumper on motherbord named clear cmos it has 3 pin .1-2-3
Put jumper in 2-3 position then again put it in 1-2 position then check .

Glad the ac adapter only being hooked up worked. Keep in mind that when batteries get to low that they can actually short out a laptop. Just some good info to know for the future. Hey if you can rate me on my solution to you I would be much obliged and I hope you get ubuntu working properly. I still want to get it to work on my other laptop, seems like a cool operating system.

try checking this issue using some other HD if the other one works fine then get this one replaced..

If your CPI does not have a LAN (network) port, you will need to get one that plugs into your PCMCIA slot...

Try to connect an external keyboard, see if that one works. If it does, then the problem is most likely a loose ribbon cable from the internal keyboard to the motherboard (especially if you recently installed a new one) - also, while you are examining the cable, look for any tears, cuts, or kinks in the cable. first of reset bios to default.
you can can use any xp disk as long as you have cd key(any valid cd key for that matter)and install fresh copy (factory set/default)
eg I have 4 laptops and a tower pc all of which I have xp pro installed from same disk and same key +sp3 and ie8 and nav360

please check with the power cord and see whether you see a ligh on the machine if yes then try to power on in the safe mode if it opens up then check some of the hardwares connected to teh machine and then try to disconnect them
that will work if still doesnot work on the ac adapter also then mobo ( motherboard) needs a replacement

There are a number of reasons that the unit could be freezing up.

1. Corrupted file(s)
2. Low available disk space
3. Viruses and/or malware
4. Too many add-ons/toolbars/etc.
5. Heat build-up

Number one is the hardest to find. So start with #2. The computer needs free hard drive space to operate. If the disk is nearly full or is very fragmented, this can slow the machine to a crawl. Laptops are very susceptible to heat issue since they are often placed on beds, sofas, carpets, and yes, even laptop. Many of these units draw cooling air from the bottom and exhaust it to the side. Even those that draw air from the rear and exhaust to the side will often intake large amounts of dust, grit, and lint. These can partially or completely clog the heat sink unit and cause heat buildup of the processor. This will cause the processor to work slower and can actually cause it to thermally lockup, resulting in the need to reboot. Many units can be accessed to clean with a removable cover on the bottom; others may need to be serviced by a technician to clean.

NO if you do, a noob will blow it to kingdom come. as in letting the smoke out. the power-pack does 3 things it has the correct DC voltage and wattages and #2 prevents fire when the PC fails and things short inside. and prevents huge damaging surges landing inside the PC buy used power pack off fleabay and win. i bet I'd mow one lawn and and buy one

try restarting the laptop and before anything pops up on the screen hit the f8 key and the boot menu comes up then start in last configuration that worked and see if it helps

1. Ask the seller to unlock it for you. If its the user password for the OS: Boot to install media and perform a clean OS install. If its a password on the BIOS you have to call Dell Tech support. Provide them with the service tag number. They can generate a "back door" unlock code.

why not read the manual at dell.com all that is in the manual or use youtube, search. there are 2 batteries, the big one, that pops out and the RTC coin cell inside.
