In case of a laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper.

There are a few things this could be, most of them are motherboard related, but there could be a cooling issue or a power supply issue. Check the BIOS log for "thermal events". Things like CPU overheating can cause weird reactions in the machine, called System hysteresis. Basically, the computer goes crazy, opening things, crashing, rebooting, etc. Based on what youve said, "restarts normally", I dont think there is a CPU issue, nor a memory issue.

The first thing I would try is replacing the power supply and remove the battery (just as a test), and see if the machine starts behaving better or exhibits the same issues.

I believe the issue you have described can be most likely resolved with a new motherboard, especially if the power supply route does not yield positive results. Bad news is, a p3 motherboard is rather hard to get, and hard to replace, and rather pricey. I would sooner consider getting another notebook pc before replacing the board.

I wouldn't. In theory, it could install it with enough HDD space, but in practice it would not be productive, would no doubt take more than 5mins just to boot up, and God knows how long to open any program.

Id upgrade to something from at least 2004/2005 then install windows 7 on that, something with at least 2gb of RAM.

Open the cover of your PC. Find where is the battery installed. Closely observe that near battery, the is a three position jumper. Two positions will the short and one will be open. Usually they are termed as 1 2 and 3. Usually 1 and 2 pins are kept short. Position the jumper to pin 2 and 3 for five minutes then back to 1 and 2. Start the PC. All the CMOS settings including password will be gone. You can set new password and other settings now. :-) ([email protected])

There may be a short circuit in it. Check the connector and other visibl places. It may solve your problm.

Try downloading drivers from http://support.dell.com or http://www.opendrivres.com and install. It may solve the problem. ([email protected])

Press f8 when starting up and see whether the problem still occurs, f8 = safe mode.

Make sure the second HDD is formatted GPT otherwise it won't work.
