There are 4 screws at the bottom  in the corners  - remove those and the top of the scanner will be separated.

check that the power source is connected well and can power up other devices. unplug and replug the power cable. do you get any leds when power cable is reinserted? Error indicator? or is the led flashing? post back

Perhaps this: the scanner calibrates itself on a white strip above the place where the lamp is in rest. When there is a spot on that white strip, the scanner wil use the retreived information for the whole scan, resulting in a line on your scan.

Just install the Twain driver, photoprint and copy utility.

I am sure the original poster will have probably replaced the unit by now but I just had a similar problem with my Epson Perfection 2480 Photo scanner so I think it is still worth posting the solution in case other people hit this problem in the future. All I had to do was put the switch underneath the scanner to the "unlocked" position and then reboot the unit. Hey presto it burst back into life. It's annoying to see that the manual seems to suggest that the red light means the unit is "dead" !
