My keyboard beeps when you press ANY key. If you hold it down it beeps, then it beeps again and types the key, this takes over a second to type each key. This isnt because of a slow repeating rate either, and I've unplugged it multliple times or tried restarting the computer. I currently am having the problem on my gateway computer which uses Microsoft Windows XP SP2. Please help and thank you.
I found out what was wrong in my case. Someone had tampered with the accessibility options
So for anyone with keyboard problem check :
In Windows XP : control panel-> accessibility options -> keyboard : StickyKeys and Filterkeys checkboxes should be unchecked.
In Windows Vista : Ease of access -> Ease of access center -> keyboard : StickyKeys and Filterkeys checkboxes should be unchecked.

Hi, I had the same problem with my keyborad and all the above did not work for me. After checking keyboard/HDD/Ram failure, IRQ conflicts, Fresh Widows install, I have finally understood where the problem lied.Here is my system:
Dell Latitude 131L;
Windows XP SP3;
Dual core AMD Turion 1.83 Ghz;
1.5 GB RAM;
160 GB HDD;
ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 with CCC and all.
After installing/updating the graphic drivers from ATI, check for “Ati2evxx.exe”. In: Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services. the ATI Hotkey Poller may be set to run. Go to Properties and disable it; reboot the system. I did not have any Cyberlink s/w and this service was not showing in msconfig, but it is listed in the services list.
Now my system is back to normal and I’m really glad not to be bothered about it anymore, so irritating.

I have a Gateway system that came with a KB-0532 keyboard, version T, that is driving me insane.
Some of the keys have alternate characters, appearing in blue. For example, the quotation mark/apostrophe key alternates to a pair of 'slanted' apostrophes; the pipe/backslash key alternates to angled brackets.
This could be handy, however, the keyboard will, every few moments, arbitrarily start using these alternate characters. I can temporarily solve the problem by quitting the application and restarting it. When I'm working on a web project, and have several windows open in Dreamweaver, it's a serious inconvenience. I have searched high and low for a solution to this problem but cannot even find a reference to it. The computer came without any keyboard-related documentation, nor can I find any on the Gateway website.
I've tried to reinstall the driver, looked for new drivers, and even reinstalled the OS. Nothing works. I'm desperate for any advice you can offer, and am grateful in advance.
Same keyboard, same problem for almost 2 years now, and just now figured out how to fix it!! Try a simple left ctrl-shift, your language tab up top will switch between US English/Canadian English/Canadian multilingual, or whatever you set it for. I occasionally want the alternate characters applied, so now I can switch back and forth easily. You may need to set the language tab to your preferred settings. Hope this helps!

Every `time I `hit `the `space `bar `a `little `dash `appears, `as `you `can `see `here! `Could `someone `provide `a `fix `for `me? `Thanks. By the `way `my `operating `system `is `vista
Many programs extend the usefulness of the function keys by using key combinations. The most common combinations are Shift + a function key, Alt + a function key, and Crtl + a function key. These combinations can be very useful. For instance, in Microsoft Word, when any text is highlighted, pressing the Shift key plus the F3 key will change the case of the text from all caps, initial caps, to all lowercase. Shift + F7 will choose the Thesaurus command. These shortcuts allow you to access such functions with one keystroke rather than three or four mouse clicks.

i cant get the shift key to produce the 'at' symbol as in my email adress.
Try using the other shift key. If that works, then you most likely have a dirty or defective keyboard.
Does the number 2 work? Does your shift key product uppercase letters (does it work with other keys?)
If you are having problems with a flaky keyboard, it's pretty inexpensive to replace it and reduce your stress.

how do you unlock the numlock on a gateway laptop?
Uncle Buck:
On the bottom of the keyboard and to the left you will see a blue "FN" .
Now locate the "Pad Lock or Key with a Paddle-lock Icon" across the top and to the right of the function keys.
Hold down the "FN" key, press the "pad Lock" key, release both keys.
You should be good to go...

my keyboard will not let me type 2 letters in a row without pushing shift first. ex- if i type letter, it loks like this leter if i dont hit shift before hiting the t again. same with backspace, if i need to backspace more than once i have to hit shift first
try turning off filter keys. if you don't know how to do this, go under control panel, click on the search bar if you have vista, just type in "repeat" and click on the filter-keys link. then uncheck the "turn on filterkeys" box and click apply at the bottom. best of luck.
