Yes you are right, it is more than likely the nightshot button that has shorted.

This is button is part of what we call the Switch control Block.

Phone your local Sony service Centre and ask them how much it would cost to replace the switch control block. My estimate is about a 1/5 of the original cast you paid for the camera.

There are so many causes, why a camera can over or underexpose. If you put the main dial on the camera logo or on the camera logo with the P next to is, every picture should be correct. Only when you have chosen for scene and the wrong scene is selected, you fool the camera. If the main dial was not on one of the two logo's put it there and test. Later look in the manual to see how you could improve a picture to your wish, if you want to shoot a fast moving object of a portrait.

the battery may have developed a memory from continually recharging a partially used battery. The battery charges to this point and reads fully charged but when used it shows as flat because the charged portion is the bit that is used and not the whole battery. Replace the battery with a new one and only charge the battery when it shows as flat.
