I'm assuming you got a new remote with the cable/sat box. These remotes can act as universal remotes but must have a code input that will operate your particular brand of TV. This should allow for turning the TV on and off and controlling the volume if you are using the TV speakers. There should have been a user manual given to you with the new cable/sat box that will detail the process for finding and inputting the code and other troubleshooting. First thing is to check the inputs with another device. If that works the you have a problem with your XBOX. If it doesn't work then you have a port problem on your TV which means you will most likely have to replace the input board. it may not be speaker that is the problem, but the firmware tha needs to be upgraded.

Try to turn the TV off and on by removing the power plug. Leave the plug out for at least one hour and then try again.

Are you sure the Sub has power and is working? If the sub isn't working, try re-linking it with the sound bar.

I would have thought that without the other speakers all you would get is just a lot of bass, the phones own speakers would not really be a match for the sub. Assuming the phone has a sub-woofer socket!

Unfortunately no. There must be a source for the audio. If there is no headphone jack or Audio output of some sort there is no way to make the sound bar work with the audio in the TV.
