Sounds like the dead speaker took out the amplifier output too. You may need a new head unit.

If it's an aftermarket CD player there's a fuse in the back of the unit. The car should have a fuse in the fuse box. Some CD players have a reset button behind the face you can use an ink pin to reset it

It may be that the "mute" lead on the head unit is shorting or grounding. Check the wiring and then reset the unit.
