The Issue
The drive is not
recognized.
Questions to Ask
Is the drive’s power on?
Does an icon for the drive appear
on the computer (On a Mac a CDROM
must be inserted in the drive)?
Are all of the cables connected
securely and correctly?
Are both ends of the USB 2.0 cable
connected and properly seated?
Possible Solutions
Check to see that all of the power cords are properly
connected and that the switch on the rear of the drive is
turned on. If you are using a surge protector, make sure that
it is switched on, too.
Check for an icon on the Desktop (on a Mac) or in My
Computer (on a PC).
Make sure that all the steps in section 2. Getting Connected
have been followed correctly. Examine the connections
carefully to ensure that all the cables are inserted in the
correct orientation and in the correct location.
Check both ends of the USB 2.0 cable. Disconnect them, wait
10 seconds, and reconnect them. If the drive is still not
recognized, restart your computer and try again.

Is there a conflict with other device

Possible Solutions
Mac OS 9.x Users: If your LaCie drive is not being
recognized by the recording software, you may be
experiencing an extension conflict between the software and
iTunes or Disc Burner. There are two possible solutions to this
problem.
If you do not plan on using iTunes or Disc Burner, follow these
steps:
1) From the Apple Menu, go to Control Panels and open the
Extensions Manager.
2) Scroll down to the Extensions folder and disable (uncheck)
the USB Authoring Support and the FireWire Authoring
Support.
3) Click on the Restart button to restart your computer.
4) Launch the recording software again, and check to see if it
recognizes the drive now.
If you plan on using both the recording software and iTunes
or Disc Burner, you may want to create a separate Extension
Set for the recording software.
1) From the Apple Menu, go to Control Panels and open the
Extensions Manager.
2) Press the Duplicate Set button.
3) Give the new Extension set a name, such as Writing.
4) Scroll down to the Extensions folder, and disable (uncheck)
the USB Authoring Support and the FireWire Authoring
Support.
5) Click on the Restart button to restart your computer.
Now when you want to use this set, simply go back into
Extensions Manager, and from the pull-down menu from
Selected Sets:, choose your new Extension set.

Ok. What I am going to suggest may seem like a daunting task but if you are careful and do only what I suggest you should be ok. The first thing you are going to have to do is manually make a change to the Windows registry to fix the permissions. 1. Fix registry permissions a. Click on "Start" choose "Run", then type "regedit" and click "OK". b. In the Registry Editor, click on the "+" next to "HKEY_Local_Machine". c. Now click on the "+" next to "Software". d. Right-click on the key (folder) called "Roxio" and choose "Permissions". e. Make sure that "Administrators" and "System" have checkmarks for "Full Control" - "Allow". f. If you had to add those checkmarks, click on "Apply". g. Click on "Advanced". h. Put a checkmark in "Replace permission entries on all child objects with the entries shown here that apply to child objects". i. Click "OK". j. Click "OK" again. k. Now close the Registry Editor Next, you will have to uninstall the Roxio software. 1. Remove Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 a. Go to Start--->Settings--->Control Panel--->Add/Remove Programs b. Select Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 and select "Remove" c. Once the uninstall is complete, reboot the computer. 2. Reinstall Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 a. Insert the CD and install as you did before and then reboot. Check the data recovery programme used for an idea or start again now you have your data back by re initialising and formatting the drive as a new one.

Depending on your OS, use your disc utility and see if it has been initialised or not. If not initialise it and then you can format and use it as normal.

U should test for power at the connector that goes into the lacie with a voltmeter to make sure power supply and its wire are OK. If no voltmeter then use a automobile brake or turn signal bulb to see if it has power.

Just an idea. When you set pass words or any important information write all information in a note book and keep it in a drawer someplace where you will not lose it. When things change write the new ones down and cross out the old ones. I save a lot of head aches that way.

Pushing in the paperclip should unlock it, but if still jammed, may have to wreck drive by pulling off front of drive drawer thing. Maybe try putty knife to push cd down some of that's holding it from opening.

Replace perhaps, but repair is most difficult. The electronics are miniature and it takes special tools to do repairs.

Two ways this can go. If you are talking about the entire hard drive pulling it out and plugging the whole drive into another pc. Then you're fine If you are talking about disassembling the hard drive and moving the disks inside. This is not something you can do. This is what you will need. 1) a certified clean room surgical grade 2) tape 3) A matching drive/ hd board down to revision number 4) presision screw tools. 5) patience. Or you will need to contact a professional data recover company.
