You can eject from my computer open it right click your dvd drive and select eject or you can insert a pin (sewing needle or safety pin) into the tiny pin hole near the eject button and push lightly this will eject it as well.

Hello Loula,
the problem could be with the signal type from the hard drive. Depending on your drive model, the button to press to cycle through the different signal types changes. Please refer to your drive manual to know which one it is or please tell us which model of drive you own so that we can find it out for you.

I just plugged my LaCie

Try a different USB jack. If it still doesn't appear you probably have to format it for Windows.
To do this, right-click on My Computer, go to Manage, then choose Disk Management.
The disk should appear there. You'll have to format it for Windows in order to use it.

It sounds like your Lacie has died as the clicking noise it the drive attempting to find the tracks on the disk itself and not suceeding . Most Lacie products have a 12 month warrantee on them and so would suggest taking it back to the supplier and getting it replaced
Hope this helps

Making a weird sound for

I'm going to tell how to try to get your hard back in bussines , but don't do if your hard it's STILL WARANTY , and you think you are not capable.
it sounds like your hard's reader is stuked.
1. open the top. (all 6 screws + the one under the stiker)
2. carefully drag the reader back in it's offline position.
3. put the hard in your sistem (opened but take care not to touch inside or not to get any dust in) and power the sistem
4. you should be able to see the disk speaning smooth and the reader moving whithout problems.
5. if the hard is working fine , shut down the sistem , unplug the hard , put the top back(but this time try not to screw it back that hard)

Enjoy your hard...if the problem comes back , try to save your data on a new hard disk.

My Lacie 500 gb harddrive

Yes. Most disk-drives come either with a 1-year or a 3-year warranty. Your warranty probably has expired. If not, exercise the warranty, to get a replacement, at minimal cost to you.

Hi, When I turn on my

Hello,

What I would suggest you should do is this,

First of all make sure that the USB port that you are using to connect it to your PC is a USB 2.0

port, and not USB 1.0.

Also if it came with an external power, connect it to the external power before putting on your PC.

This is because the voltage supplied by USB 1.0 is lower than that of USB 2.0 and therefore

might not be enough to power up your USB Drive.

Then, depending on your operating system,

Right-Click on 'My Computer Icon', then select 'Manage'.

When you get to Computer Management page,

Click on Disk Management on left hand side,

This will display ALL the disks installed on your system, either partitioned or not partitioned,

formatted or not formatted.

Then go to the ones that are hidden, not created, or not displayed, right-click on it, then you'll see

different actions that you can perform.

Also, in some instances, what you just need to do when you get to this page is to assign a new,

distinct, drive letter apart from the ones already in use on the system.

This will automatically bring out the hidden drives.

Hope I have helped you out.

Kindly keep me posted about the problem and let me know how it goes.

Goodluck and thank you for using fixya.

> is this a problem with ... my PC?

Try connecting the drive to a different PC.
If you have the same (intermittent?) problem, then it is NOT your PC which is at fault.

I suspect that your unit is about to _permanently_ fail.
Make a backup copy of all your files, before it does.

Then, exercise LaCie's warranty to get it replaced.

I have an external 500GB

You are hoping there is a reasonably inexpensive way to recover the data from your (let's face it) broken hard drive. There is not. If the data is really important, take the drive to the local computer repair shop and see if they can either fix it or recover the data. Be warned, it will cost nearly the cost of a new one for them to look at it and not fix it. Most decent places can do a forensic recovery of the data if it is of high value to you though. There are several .5 terabyte drives for around 60 dollars in the Sunday paper inserts, I noticed.
Sorry for the confirmation:)

Hi there my Lacie 500GB

Try disconnecting the firewire/usb cable from the drive and take the drive to a quiet place.

Power up the drive and put your ear next to it. Listen for the internal disk to speed up and then click (which means it's ready). At this point you should have a solid blue LED on the enclosure.

If not, either the disk is bad, the enclosure's controller is bad, or the external power brick is bad (put your ear next to the power brick and if you hear a faint clicking sound, the power brick is bad and you can order a new one from LaCie for about $16.00.
