the power circuit is most likely blown. You can buy an external hard drive case and put the hard drive in it. Be sure to buy correct size hard drive enclosure. The other way is to remove hard drive from external case and put into computer with a spare sata connection.

Bob, I had a similar problem with two LaCie external hard drives. LaCie doesn't manufacture hard drives, they only purchase drives from other companies, like Seagate, and mount those drives in LaCie external enclosures. If the drive is nearing the point of total failure, then your Mac is letting you know that point is very close. You had better find a new backup device to use. The Mac will let you access the drive for a while longer, but if you do not act, there will come a point when the Mac will not be able to read the data on the drive and any backups you have there will be lost. When you get a new external hard drive to use for backup, you may not need to do anything with the current drive that is failing, as long as you do not anticipate that you will need anything from the backups that it contains. You can set up the new device as your primary backup. I would then advise that you perform a total backup on the new device ASAP, so that you are not left without at least one good backup.

I have a LaCie TB080LL/A

It's shutting down because the power board from the case overheats and fails. Basically this drive is dying - using it for archiving purpose is the absolute worst decision you could make since you can be absolutely sure it will die for good very soon. There is nothing you can do to fix it, it's normal wear caused by its advanced age.
Just junk it and get a new one.

I have an old LaCie

Hello,
your drive can be used with any D2 or Big Disk power supply as well as some LaCie Porsche power supplies (you need to make sure the connector is the same).
Searching for LaCie Power supply on eBay will give you a few hits that match your needs.

Hi, I use this HD

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

I think I fried my LACIE 500gb drive

Sadly if you fried the drive with that PSU cord it would be pretty hard for a home repair. If you know its definatly dead, I would just remove the drive from the external unit and try to connect it internally to a computer. If the adaptor is different you could buy a cheapy online somewhere.

Mac drive not reading on pc

There is a software called macopener that let's you read mac formatted drives with a PC.
If that fails, and If the hdd is in device manager, than at least you can use carving tools like photorec to pull your files out, even if the filesystem is corrupt. If you want somebody else to do it for you you can check Data Recovery NYC. Otherwise http://hddguru.com/ is a great source for tools and knowledge on how to do it yoruself.

Hi there

Does the drive have any clicking noises is so it maybe on it's way out some HDD will spin upto speed and then still not mount can you try to look in device manager for a yellow ! or a red X if you can see this is means that windows has found it but not loaded the drivers.

If it has a drive letter but the drive appears blank when you open it then its a driver problem reload the USB drivers.

Let me know and I will help further !

Having Problem with both LaCie hard drives being recognized on both macs

Try to connect to another computer, and see if it recognizes the drive. If Not, you can dismantle LaCie and take the disk out.

Connecto your disk to another external box (USB or Firewire) so you can have access to you data.

My Lacie hard drive is not working

It Seems to me like when you unpluged it without properly ejecting it, that it partly corrupted the part of the ext. hard drive that is recignised by the pc to then recignise it and make it ready for you to use.

If it uses a power adpter to power it plug that in first, then plug it into you computer, and see if that works.
I hope I helped.

Yours,
cjpipod

Got a 5-year old Lacie 160 gb that had been used as a Mac backup.

This external hard drive is a firewire and if your laptop does not have firewire ports, then you can't use
it, but if you have a desktop, then there are solutions to your problem in the form of a firewire card.

There is no such thing as an adaptor for a firewire cable, since firewire is an entirely different technology
than the ports your PC presently has.

Firewire is an extremely high speed technology which exceeds the speed of usb and other kinds of ports.

You can get a firewire card for as little as $13.00 here
