"It's dead, Jim"

Seriously? That drive is old enough to be in the 6th grade. If it is really imperative to get it working you can try percussive maintenance (slap it on the bottom), giving it the cold shoulder (putting it in the freezer for a day) or giving it shaken baby syndrome (give it a good cocktail shaking). If the issue is a stuck drive head or loose circuit board that may fix it. If it's just dead of old age (thermal fatigue, tin whiskers, etc) it's time to recycle. If it's just the drive that's dead it might be possible to reuse the case, but, if it's the IDE drive case don't bother.

I support the comments of (fire sine) I have the d2 120gb Lacie and it was down for two years.  I took it to my apple guys and they said that I needed to go to a data recovery service which would cost a gang of money.  Come to find out, when I decided to update my internal hard drive on my Mac Pro, I had to buy a SATA, IDE, USB 2.0 adapter to back up the internal and transfer to the new internal. Long story short, something said, Hey try and open the Lacie and bypass the board in the enclosure and connect directly to the Western Digital drive inside.  AND WHALA! I got my info, so all I need is a new enclosure.

Hi, Your query, "Where do I buy parts?" depends on your location. Pls try Google for an "IDE to USB Adapter or enclosure." Based on previous work on similar problems, it is very rare for the "bridge or internal cabling" to go bad. More often than not, it is the actual drive that is at fault. Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turn up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards.

it most likely means the enclosure has failed. Especially if it is not making and odd sounds. 4 out of every 5 of those things just needs a new enclosure. If you need the data, then break the label on the rear, Unscrew the 2 screws, and test the drive in a computer or different enclosure.

Just an idea. When you set pass words or any important information write all information in a note book and keep it in a drawer someplace where you will not lose it. When things change write the new ones down and cross out the old ones. I save a lot of head aches that way.

Pushing in the paperclip should unlock it, but if still jammed, may have to wreck drive by pulling off front of drive drawer thing. Maybe try putty knife to push cd down some of that's holding it from opening.

Replace perhaps, but repair is most difficult. The electronics are miniature and it takes special tools to do repairs.

Two ways this can go. If you are talking about the entire hard drive pulling it out and plugging the whole drive into another pc. Then you're fine

If you are talking about disassembling the hard drive and moving the disks inside. This is not something you can do.
This is what you will need.
1) a certified clean room surgical grade
2) tape
3) A matching drive/ hd board down to revision number
4) presision screw tools.
5) patience.

Or you will need to contact a professional data recover company.
