No, it will only burn CD's. You need a DVD-RW/DVD-R burner.

Hi jratz,

The information I found leads me to believe your computer is a Dell. If it is, you can go to this web page:

and enter the service tag number, which should be on your computer. That will lead you to a phone number to Dell technical support.

Hope this helps.

The reason your DVD R was not read- is the drive is a CD-RW, meaning it can read CD, CD R, and CD RW disks- NOT DVD, DVD R, DVD RW

the problem is that you need to reinstall the operating system clean ..cause you have a virus ...that affected the driver for this ..Im almost sure that at the time you contacted the driver the other drives were asking for a program when you was trying to open them ..
to dix it at the moment just right click on it in the device manager and update driver ..
It will start the add new hardware wizard ..but choose not to look on the internet or in a location ..but to choose it from a list ...when the list with available drivers will be displayed just click on one with almost the same name ...at least the manufacturer and first letters..if it was installed once ...it will be there ..and than continue with the installation ..
it will appear again in the my computer folder ..but until you reinstall it clean ...it will do no good cause in a day or two will be right back from where we started...
In this anticipation ...I will link you here a download torrent with a image file to burn a windows Xp sp2..in case you do not have one ..and you use the recovery (recovery will not work it needs formatting the C partition )
I hope you know how to install the xp from a boot-able disk ..if you do not ..let me know and I will link to a site where it is explained in details and you can even print them to have a clue on the run...
this image is from a genuine xp..and it will update after installing ..to sp3..
to burn the Image you will need a burner like NERO or iso burn..in case you do not have one ..let me know and I give you one ..
all ya have to do ..is download the torrent using a torrent client like .
.Utorrent...after you done this ...install Nero if you don't have ...and a new..blank cd ...and double click on the image ..it will burn the xp automatically ..
with this disk...install the computer clean ..and during the installation format the C drive (partition) in NTFS quick ...
I assume you have the drivers ..be sure you got them on a disk ..or in another partition ...to be able to reinstall them ....(at this point the recovery disc will do too..if it is for xp)
ok ..this is the torrent program:
this is the Nero 7 with keys..(in case you need)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/yznzmdonjgm/Nero 7.rar
and this is the actual download for the XP image ..that will burn a boot-able disk
download the actual torrent not the advertising ...:d
aaaaaa by the way ..this is the cd key ..but I think I placed it in the folder too
I know that it seams complicated...but when you finish downloading and..after you burn it on a disk ..all you have to do is to boot from cd ...and install ...ask a friend if you ar not that into computers..I placed all this just to be sure you will have all the tools..
PS...if you do not have the drivers for your pc...let me know the name and number , and I will look for a download for this model..at least for sound and LAN card until you connect and look for them yourself..
Have a good day ..and please contact me for anything that you didn't understood..

It Sounds like you need a CODEC, to DECode the movie, so that it will burn it. Try this: goto http://www.dvd43.com download the decrypter. Install it, and you should be able to burn most, if not all the newer DVD's.
Let me know if this does not work for you. If that happens, let me know what version of Windows you are using

this is most likely an interface issue either on the motherboard or drive....could be software but dvd drives don't last forever. when booting press delete and let it go into bios setup. You don't need to change anything in bios, just try opening the drive. If it opens without delay remove any disc. Reboot PC and see if the drive behaves, If it's still being awkward, with the PC unplugged open up the PC and remove the drives data cable. Start PC, close down PC. Reconnect drive (use a different IDE /SATA connection if possible) Try DVD drive again. If the fault still persists, It's most likely the drive. Get a new one they are really cheap.

You may need to disable CD autorun feature. What version of Windows do you have?

This is common. It usually means the laser diode is too weak to burn the layer on the disc, or the lens has lost it's clarity. This means the optical pickup assembly requires replacement. Probably time to replace the drive.

This does sound like a defective drive, most likely a laser / reader issue, because the refractive properties of the CDR is different from a "pressed" disk it looks like thia failed TOC seek issue, the head starts at the center of the disk and reads outwards, the click noise is most likeley the head reaching the terminus (the outer limit of the motorised movement), the drive then unable to find the TOC gives up and decides the disk is unreadable. if this drive is within the manufacturer's Warrantee period I would reccommend sending it back.
