Here is link for Dell drivers fro your NEC DVD.

If you do note have a Dell, go to the home web page of youe brand and find Support and / or Downloads, and search for the driver there.

This is usually a fairly simple process, if you have the model number of the PC

I recommend using convertX to dvd which you can download from thepiratebay.org and works quite well without updating.

Hi,
see if its recognised in the Device Manager. Start/My computer/Control Panel/System/Device manager.
if so remove or uninstall the Drive.
Physically remove/eject the drive from the Computer. reboot then shutdown. re-insert the Drive. boot computer and see if it,s detected by the system or ( found new hardware Wizard )
re-install any drivers as requested. Installing SP3 shouldn,t do this. unless the drive was actually Virused Or failing already.

As DVD Burners are so cheap, it is much more economical to buy a new burner and install it (also much easier!).

To replace the burner - you open the case - disconnect the cables to the drive - remove 4 screws holding it in (2 on each side) - then slide it out the front. Rplacement is a reversal of teh above instructions.

BEWARE - Static electricity will kill ANY electronic component that gets zapped. Make sure you earth yorself before you touch anything inside the case and try to keep yourself earthed by keeping contact with your arms and the chassis - including when you remove and replace the cables!

Basically a very easy process to complete as long as you do not Zap anything.

Good luck.

I see that you are using a DVD+R disc...Some drives can only do + or -. Have you tried using a DVD-R disc? You could also check and see if there is a firmware update from the NEC website.

I figured out what was causing the problem with my NEC 6500A on my Dell laptop: The Sony Picture Motion Browser software that I was using to burn DVD's is only compatible up to Service Pack 2 of Windows XP. The day after I installed Service Pack 3, the software stopped burning DVD's. So I uninstalled Service Pack 3, rebooted, unistalled the Sony PMB software, rebooted and re-installed the Sony PMB software and I can now burn DVD's again. So check whether the software you're burning your DVD's with is compatible with whatever version of your operating system you're operating with. Hope this helps someone else!

If it's only 8 months old, then you have atleast 4 months left on your warranty. The problem will either be the ide controller channel or the dvd drive and firmware has faulted, the same fault probably happens when you have put a dvd in and it wont read or eject. Return to the place of purchase, where the drive should be replaced or the notebook exchanged.

Do a Google search using the following string

(Brand Name) (Model Number) +"region free"

Include the + sign (no space) and the quotes, this should either bring up a Firmware download or will give the codes to make your unit region free. Don't forget to look in the forums as these are probably the best source for the codes.

Good luck.

Try burning at a slower speed, like 16x or less. If your burner is a CAV-type, it will burn faster as it moves toward the outside of the disk and can be more prone to errors that way.

Also, have you tried playing the burned disk in another player, and did it show the same symptoms?
