E18 error

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, or if repair costs close to the value of the camera, they're worth a try.

Does the A70 need a memory card in order for it to

Yes. The camera has a very limited internal memory only used to buffer (temporary storage while processing) digital images. You need a CF Card (type 1) to save and store your images.

No display except in stitch assist and camera

Think that you might have accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.
